Socks in the Frying Pan are a multi-award winning trio from County Clare on the West coast of Ireland, the universal hub of Irish traditional music. Their dynamic vocal harmonies, virtuosic musical ability and their onstage wit has captured and captivated audiences the world around. One of the most sought after groups in Irish music today, the worldwide ‘Sock Invasion’ continues!

Three hours of workshops and instruction in Irish dance, vocal, instrumental from artists of global acclaim. World-class education and participatory sessions to learn about Irish Music and Culture. Six live instructors bring you decades of careful study and honing skills.

Shay & Michael Black are the singing siblings from Ireland's foremost family of song, The Black Family, which also includes their sisters Mary & Frances, & brother, Martin. Hailed in the Irish Echo as “one of the most impressive groups of Irish singers to be found anywhere; exquisite, exhilarating and nothing short of thrilling” as they raise their sibling rivalry to revelry, and accompanied by keyboardist, Eamonn Flynn.

Stanford Irish Film Festival

As part of the Stanford Irish Association's St. Patrick's Day celebrations, we are hosting a mini Irish Film Festival this March.

This next weekend we are hosting a second virtual screenings of a recent Irish film: Arracht (trailer)a powerful Irish language feature film (with subtitles!) set during the same period of history. Last year coincided with the 175th anniversary of the beginning of the Great Irish Famine 1845-1849 during which over a million people perished and a further million and a quarter fled this country of eight million people.

To join the screenings, please sign up here. On the day of the each screening (dates below), we will send a link to the films, which will remain available for 24 hours.

We were struck by the many similarities between the experiences depicted in these films and the current pandemic, not just in terms of a tremendous loss of life, but also in the surrounding economic and political dialogue. We are delighted to provide exclusive access to the Stanford and Bay Area community.

We look forward to seeing you all there (virtually).

Ciaran, Brian and Alex

ARRACHT (trailer)
Date: Thursday, March 11th - Sunday, March 14th
ARRACHT, which means Monster, is Ireland's entry for the 2021 Oscars' international feature film category, selected by The Irish Film and Television Academy.
ARRACHT tells the story of Colmán Sharkey, a fisherman, a father, a husband, living on the wild shores of Connemara in 1845 as The Great Hunger descends. As land taxes rise and crops rot Colmán confronts his Landlord, the night ends in deadly violence and Colmán is forced to go on the run, hunted for crimes he did not commit. As the years pass in solitude, Colmán returns to the mainland and encounters a young girl, Kitty and a life-saving friendship develops. ARRACHT is a bracingly authentic and tender story about finding hope when all else is lost.

Folktastic Fridays with Kathryn Rose

Friday, March 12th 7:00 PM

Online via Facebook Live

Join Kathryn for Folktastic Fridays! Click Here to go to her Facebook Profile, and then look for the little red LIVE button.

Kathryn Rose is a folk singer and recording artist from Oregon. She has been singing since she could talk and grew up listening to Irish and Scottish folk music.

Kathryn says:
Join Me For My FRIDAY Evening Live-Stream Show!! Message Me With Any Requests. Your tips mean more than you could ever know!
paypal.me/kathrynrosefolk or Venmo -- @kathrynrosefolk
I Am Official Now!! Listen - Buy The New CD Here!! https://kathrynrose.hearnow.com/

Kathryn began seriously collecting songs after her grandmother passed away and she discovered a treasure trove of handwritten Irish folk songs tucked inside the piano bench. After that discovery, Kathryn transitioned from a classical singing background into the folk world. Her favorite musical style is Sean-nós, and she is working on her Gaeilge to perform more of these songs in the future. She performs folk music from both sides of the pond, with an emphasis on Ireland and even a dash of Gaeilge here and there.

Kathryn accompanies herself on the tenor guitar, but at various times in her life has had encounters with the piano, violin, lap harp, ukulele, and tin whistle. Her influences include Susan McKeown, Christy Moore, the Clancy Brothers, Seamus Begley, Sarah Ghriallais, Moya Brennan, and more. With her melodic voice, her love of world cultures and her attention to detail, she continues the tradition of Celtic folk music as an artist, a performer and an inspiration for peace and harmony in a complicated world. Kathryn and her husband live in somewhat peaceful harmony with their brood of hooligan cats.

John Whelan Master Sessions #18

Saturday, March 6th, 2:00 PM
The Young Fiddlers: Tara Breen, Finn Magill, Brónagh Barnes with Feargal Barnes (John’s cousins!), the Carroll Sisters, and Shannon Muenchow

Online via Zoom

Seven-time All-Ireland Button Accordion Champion John Whelan is one of the world's best living Irish button accordion players. John was raised in the vibrant London Irish music scene of the 1970s, and learned his craft from such legends as Lucy Farr, Roger Sherlock, Paddy Taylor, Mick O Connor and his teacher Brendan Mulkaire. Along with his All-Ireland Championships, he was twice awarded musician of the year from the Irish Music Association. He has over 15 CDs and has performed on Late Night with Conan O'Brien. John's music has been featured on such TV shows as 'Sex in the City,' 'History's Mysteries' and 'History Detective.' John performs with the John Whelan Band and has also teamed up with his old pal Brian Conway forming the group Gailfean, which also features Máirtin De Cógáin and Don Penzien have released their first new CD. For over a decade, John has performed 'Monday's with John' every Monday evening on his Facebook Profile.

Since last March, John has stepped up his online activities, and his latest project is Master Sessions with John Whelan.

John says:
My next Whelan Master Session is happening next Saturday, March 13th, 2:00 PM, with my friends Derek Hickey, Jimmy Keane, Josephine Marsh and John Whelan.

Irish music accordion virtuoso Jimmy Keane was born in London, to Irish-speaking parents from Connemara and Kerry. His late father Jimmy was a magnificent sean-nós (old style) singer and, along with young Jimmy's mother Mary, actively encouraged him to take up traditional Irish music.

Jimmy's accomplishments are far reaching, and many regard Jimmy as the premier exponent of traditional Irish music on the piano accordion. He has always been an avid collector and arranger of old tunes and is becoming increasingly known for his original compositions, many of which have become part of the mainstream of traditional Irish music around the world. He also has recorded and produced numerous albums, and won an unprecedented five consecutive All-Ireland titles on the piano accordion.

Josephine Marsh is an accordion player/multi-instrumentalist and award-winning composer from a musical East Clare/Co. Meath family. A consummate and highly regarded traditional musician of great style, presence and originality, she began performing on radio and television at a very young age, and recorded her first album with Cyril Ó Donoghue at the age of twenty. Since then she has gone on to record three more albums, including her latest release in 2018, 'Music in the Frame,' which is available from Custy's Music in Ennis, Co. Clare, and directly from Josephine at info.josephinemarsh71@gmail.com.

In 2020, Josephine was honoured with the prestigious Gradam Ceoil Award at The Waterfront Theatre in Belfast. Josephine has also travelled extensively over the years, both as a performer and music teacher. Her travels have taken her all over Australia, Europe and America, affording her opportunities to collaborate with a number of artists. She has also been commissioned to compose many pieces of music for Irish radio and television, including the tune An Spideóg, which she performed with her band at the aforementioned Gradam Ceoil Awards.

Derek Hickey hails from Adare, Co. Limerick, and began playing music at ten years of age when his uncle left an accordion in the family home. Within week he'd progressed to playing dance tunes, but it wasn't until the age of 12 that he began lessons under the tutelage of Dónal de Barra. Derek's professional career began when he was just 15, as he joined the Shannonside Céilí Band to tour extensively through England and Europe.

In 1992 Derek joined Arcady, and by 1995 Frankie Gavin had invited him to join the legendary De Dannan. Derek toured with the band until they disbanded in 2003. Derek is a regular tutor at the World Academy of Music and Dance, University of Limerick, and has shared the stage with such diverse talents as Stephan Grappelli and the Rolling Stones.

The Saturday master session is open to players and listeners of all levels, from anywhere in the world. It'll start at 2pm Pacific time, 5pm Eastern time, 10pm GMT, and run for two hours. The master sessions do have a requested $20 donation for attending and we need at least 30 attendees to ensure the musicians are adequately compensated, so please share this with anyone you know who might be interested. Just email John at whelanbx1@me.com for more details.

All attendees need to do is make their donation via paypal.me/buttonboxman or by Venmo to John-Whelan-37, and make sure to note that it is for Whelan Master Session #9. We'll send out the Zoom link and tune list for the master session on Friday, and any last-minute sign-ups will get the link and tune list about an hour before the session starts on Saturday.

Easily sharable information on all John's master sessions lives here.

P.S. John's Wednesday 'Taking Time' slow session is still continuing as well - Check it out here: http://johnwhelanmusic.com/slow-session. It remains free and open to all, and we'll send out a tune list and Zoom link for tomorrow's 'Taking Time' Wednesday sessions. Email John at whelanbx1@me.com to get on the list or for more details.

The Weeds
John and Tyler Weed

The Weeds--The Party for Paddy--NextGen!

Sunday, March 14th, 7:00 PM

Online via Zoom

These two familiar faces are well-known to the Celtic music crowd. John and Tyler Weed have been playing music together since Tyler was 10 and learned his first chords on guitar. John Weed (Molly's Revenge, New World String Project) is of course our all-time favorite fiddler and recording artist. But, you many not yet be acquainted with Tyler Weed, an emerging powerhouse of versatile musical talent. The maturity and depth of Tyler's playing matches perfectly with the finesse, texture and musicality that Dad brings to the stage. Well, when a lad has been listening to "pure drop Irish" since the cradle, it just comes naturally, I guess. This will be the real deal.

Tyler has expanded to mandolin, tenor banjo, clawhammer banjo, jazz guitar, and composition. Tyler grew up immersed in traditional music with heavy exposure to John's various projects with Stuart including Molly's Revenge and Little Black Train. Tyler has performed on stage with both Molly's Revenge and New World String Project, Stuart and John's Scandinavian/Celtic quartet with Lisa Lynne and Aryeh Frankfurter.

Put this date and time on your calendar and don't miss out. I will be sending a follow-up email with the concert link closer to the show. No reservation required. Just tune in, we will have a "virtual tip jar" for those who can generously support the music. For those who are pandemically challenged, just come and be with us and enjoy a fun evening of merriment.

This show will support the artists, but will also support Johns ongoing weekly music jam at St. Mary's and St. Mary's Celtic Concerts, which we hope to resume after we are all vaccinated. Oh, and bring your own Guinness, and don't forget to wear something green and put on your dancing shoes... For more info about the show or about our weekly community music jam, send an email to Jackie Pierce, or call or text her at 831-224-3819.

Shades of Green

Shades of Green

Wednesday, March 17th, 4:30 PM – 6:00 PM PDT

Online via https://www.ireland.ie/usa

Ireland's Ambassador to the United States, Daniel Mulhall, has an invitation for everyone:

A chara,

As Ireland's Ambassador in Washington, I know that nowhere in the world celebrates St Patrick's Day quite like America.

This year, because of COVID, there can be no large parades down Fifth Avenue or green rivers through Chicago. But while we can't gather in person, we can come together as a community.

On the evening of 17 March, I want to invite you to join me and our seven Consuls General in celebrating Irish-America and the ties that bind our nations.

Titled ''Shades of Green'', our gathering has been arranged in partnership with Irish cultural centers and festivals throughout the United States. Featuring some of both nation's finest artists, the ninety-minute program will celebrate Irish-America's history and traditions, as well as the resilience our community has shown in response to COVID-19. Over the course of the evening, we'll hear a special message from our Taoiseach Micheál Martin and a poetic tribute to President Joe Biden and, as a community, we'll pause to remember and honor those who we have lost this year.

After registering to join us, you'll receive a link to 'Shades of Green' in a confirmation email and a reminder again in advance of the gathering.

I look forward to seeing you then and to celebrating St Patrick's Day in your company.

Lá Fhéile Pádraig sona daoibh go léir..

Ambassador Daniel Mulhall

CrookedRoadCeiliBand
The Crooked Road Céilí Band

St. Patrick's Day at The Chaminade

Wednesday, March 17th, 5:30 PM

Chaminade Resort & Spa, 1 Chaminade Ln, Santa Cruz, CA

The Crooked Road Céilí Band plays traditional Celtic music on the hammered dulcimer, fiddle, and guitar. The word "céili" is pronounced "kay-lee," and is the Irish Gaelic word for "party!" Spirited jigs and reels brought to life, Irish folk music pure and simple, unique and magically atmospheric for an intimate evening under the stars.

The hammered dulcimer has a harp-like quality, and paired with the lilt of the fiddle and drive of the acoustic guitar, the band weaves melodies that will take you back to the cozy little pub you discovered the last time you visited Ireland. The Crooked Road Céilí Band is Irish music played in the spirit of the tradition.

David Chadwick: Fiddle and guitar

Tin Whistle, Irish Flute, Uilleann Pipes
and Anglo Concertina Lessons with Michael Eskin

Live via Zoom

I am now offering beginner and intermediate level on-line lessons using Zoom for Tin Whistle, Irish Flute, Uilleann pipes, and Anglo Concertina.

I don't have a fixed teaching curriculum. My focus is entirely on learning your goals, understanding your challenges, identifying areas to work on, and then giving you the feedback and specific tools you can use to take your playing to the next level.

I started out playing classical flute when I was 6 years old. I've now been playing Uilleann pipes, flute, and whistle in sessions for over 20 years and Anglo Concertina for 15 years. My concertina playing is based on the style and technique I learned from Noel Hill at his workshops.

Before COVID-19, I was the co-host of the weekly session for over 20 years at The Ould Sod Pub in San Diego, CA as well in the paid hosting rotation for the session at The Auld Dubliner in Long Beach, CA. Since COVID-19 restrictions went into place, I've been hosting a weekly session on Tuesday nights on Zoom that has turned into a lovely and consistently popular event.

My rate is $45.00 for a 45-minute lesson.

If you have any questions, please email me at: seisiuneer@gmail.com or call me at 619-368-1854.

Cheers and thanks,

DukeofEdinburgh
Duke of Edinburgh Pub & Restaurant
Across from Apple Park

Breaking News at The Duke

The Duke of Edinburgh Pub & Restaurant

10801 N. Wolfe Road, Cupertino, CA, 4:00 PM - 10:00 PM every day of the year

CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

Publican Stan Gamble and his partners have an update! Many of you have heard the rumors about the The Duke of Edinburgh Pub & Restaurant.

When this pandemic is over, 'The Duke'! will be moving to new quarters just across the parking lot from our current location!
For details, Watch the official Video!

The Duke is, and will remain, THE only Authentic, (and we do mean AUTHENTIC!), British Pub in the Bay Area, located across the street from Apple Headquarters on Wolfe Road in Cupertino.

The atmosphere at the 'The Duke', is the same as you would find in any pub in the British Isles, full of friendly patrons who come in to socialize, play darts, have a pint or two, and eat a meal. If you are looking for a comfortable elegance, pints of beer and authentic food, in an authentic English Pub, there is no a better choice in the Bay Area. The Duke offers a large number of beers on draft and by the bottle. Almost anything English, Scottish or Irish is available. Murphy's Irish Stout brewed in Cork, Ireland and Scotch Eggs is always a good choice.

The servers are excellent and very knowledgeable about the beer and food menu. The menu is expansive and worth exploring. The dark pubsy feel with old regulars in their respective, but not crowded corners around lunch hour in Cupertino, is a great boon.

You can't find more 'authentic' atmosphere, because the entire building was built in jolly old England, then disassembled, shipped and reassembled on site in Cupertino. With the red velvet seating and wall paper and ornate, dim lighting, you are transported to London as soon as you enter the etched glass door.

More info. on The Duke Facebook Page, website www.theduke.com or call 408-446-3853.

Plough and Stars Fundraiser

Please DONATE!

The Plough and Stars Irish Pub, 116 Clement Street at 2nd Avenue, San Francisco

CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE but ACCEPTING DONATIONS
The Plough, like many bars and restaurants in the San Francisco Bay Area, is struggling to survive. It is extremely difficult to support our family and employees with no ability to earn an income.

We have long prided ourselves on being ago to place for Irish traditional experiences. Over the years we have been privileged to host many well-known musicians from Ireland and around the globe. The Plough hosts weekly traditional Irish seisuns and dance. At our Irish Seisuns customers listen as musicians share tunes or even learn to play themselves. The Plough is also a vital venue for bluegrass jams and gigs, as well as a place where local musicians can be heard. We want to make sure that the Plough can continue in those efforts. We have been so touched by the support of friends, musicians, dancers, and patrons. They are what make the Plough the institution that it is and we can't thank them enough for their support at this difficult time. The Plough and Stars Irish Pub, is known around the world for hosting incredible Irish music and pulling beautiful pints of Guinness since 1975. Since then, it has evolved to host live music every night of the week, except Monday, including all genres of music; Bluegrass, Country, Rock, Zydeco, acoustic Americana, and of course, Irish Traditional.

The first Saturday is always Americana Jukebox and every third Friday is Bluegrass Bonanza! We welcome you to stop in for a drink and try our famous, award winning pints of Guinness, or indulge in any of our other specials. We host Happy Hour all day every Monday with free pool, and the first Monday of the month has a Pub Quiz at 8:30 PM. Check out our website for a full calendar of events!
