In late February, our Project Manager GroundTruth (GT) commenced a ‘pilot’ project, engaging five iwi kaitiaki. They were involved in a variety of experiences over their first two weeks, including an introduction to the project, a blessing of the new whare pārekereke/nursery, followed by potting native plants and seed collection within our rohe taiao. The rōpū went on haerenga – ki uta – ki te Maunga o Kapakapanui – ki tai – ki te pūaha o Waikanae, observing the various whenua conditions throughout, including observations o te reo o ngā manu. The kaitiaki also visited and shared korero at Mataihuka (our wāhi tapu / old papakāinga) that overlooks the nursery.

Everyone enjoyed the week and were able to give important feedback into the future steering of the Jobs4Nature mahi, and most have returned to work with GT for a second week. Each day they start by gathering at our iwi office in Waikanae and finish up back here at the end of the day too.

The first group of iwi kaitiaki with some of the tarata and akeake plants they have potted up.  A total of over 2000 plants have been potted up so far and will be part of future planting around the Awa.

Seed collection of Karamu seeds for growing in the nursery to produce plants for 2021 and beyond.

Kohekohe forest at Otaraua Park.  There are no seedlings due to high rabbit numbers in this area.  Future animal control and possibly fencing will be required.

Top of the world at Mataihuka.  Area north of wāhi tapu, where forest is being restored.

Based on the experiences shared with this first rōpū of kaitiaki, the programme of training and work experience is being expanded.  A vision of the project is to develop teams that can work across the rohe within the Waikanae Jobs4Nature project, helping to restore the awa, the ngahere, and ngā tamariki a Tāne that reside within the catchment.

The project is aligning it’s values with those identified within the ĀKW Kaitakitanga Plan, and a key focus is to support the development and experience across iwi kaitiaki to help with implementing our huanga to achieve shared outcomes for the restoration of the Awa.

If you are interested in how you could be part of this in the future, please contact the iwi coordinator… Kristie – admin@teatiawakikapiti.co.nz / 04 2931538 / 0272612986 😊

In response to requests for a briefing of the changes to the Trusts Act 2019, Mihiarangi Piripi and Tai Ahu of Whāia Legal have offered to run a session for Māori trustees on Tuesday 23 March 2021 at Amatiatia, 5 Main Street, Ōtaki at 9.30am.

The session will run for roughly an hour including the Q&A.  We will also look at Zooming the session for online participants.

The seminar will include:

  • Trustee duties.  What are the duties of trustees (e.g., under the common law and the new Trust Act 2019)?
  • Risk management.  How do you discharge your duties as trustees and what are the risks if you don’t?
  • Decision making.  What is a good process to follow and how do you ensure accountability back to beneficiaries?
  • Accountability and reporting.  How do the trustees ensure that they are reporting correctly to beneficiaries?
  • Meetings.  Best practice tips.
  • The interface between the Trusts Act 2019 and other legislation affecting Māori organisations, including Te Ture Whenua Māori Act 1993 and the Māori Fisheries Act 2004.

If you’re interested, please register via email letting me know if you’re planning to attend the Ōtaki session or join online.
