Quote of the week

“Thanks to new tools, speech need no longer be controlled by those who own the means of publishing and distribution, or by governments that would restrict thought and communication. Now, anyone can wield the power of the press. Everyone can tell their stories to the world.” (Zuckerman, 2013)

Debates around freedom of expression are not a new phenomenon. They have existed across many generations and are a defining feature for any democracy.

What is, however, newer, are the considerations associated with innovative technology, social media and AI.

We now have platforms from which we can speak to millions of people around the world. We can use these platforms responsibly or we can spread misinformation, we can engage in healthy expansive debates, and we can be cancelled - rightly or wrongly.

We say it every week and believe it every day - tech for good has the potential to create a positive impact for people and the planet. So when I started seeing reports about how Clubhouse was a new haven for free speech, my interest was piqued. This new space which encouraged transparent identities and audio communication over text, has opened new conversations to many. In part, it feels like everyone really can tell their stories to the world. However, where there is a platform for free speech, there is the opportunity for spreading misinformation and censorship.

We take a look below at what Clubhouse is in the context of providing a new platform for public interest news and debate, the different takes on what the app can do for free speech and how this relates to the wider tech world.

❓ So what exactly is Clubhouse? We’ll let The Guardian take this one.
