On March 24, Fanny Ekblom Johannsson (top right in the centre) had a successful PhD defense on the topic of the future of glaciers and floods, focusing on Folgefonna and Ata Sund in West Greenland.

Science and fun in Bergen 26th-27th of May
Dear all, we are happy to announce two days of Science and Fun for the Bjerknes community 26th-27th of May.
Willem van der Bilt, David Chandler, Morten Skogen, Yiguo Wang, Steffi Mayer and Ragnhild Stolt-Nielsen have together outlined an agenda combining short plenary sessions with outdoor activity, including an outdoor poster session.
Of course we have to take notice of the covid development, but for the time being, the program is as follows:
Wednesday 26th of May
1. Welcome and what have been achieved?
2. My personal research story
3. Walk and talk, what will we achieve for the future as a community
4. Lunch at the Museum garden
6. Plenary session with external speaker (TBA)
7. Walk to Fløyen, rebus and barbeque dinner
Thursday 27th of May
1. Footprints, presentation of the synthesis project
2. The way forward, perspectives from the research leaders
3. Outdoor poster session in Nygårdsparken with lunch
4. Debate: Diversity and inequality in science, what does it mean?

Tore appointed as new member of The Norwegian National Commission for UNESCO

Tore Furevik has been appointed new member of The Norwegian National Commission for UNESCO which consists of members appointed by the Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research. All members have special skills in at least one of UNESCO’s four disciplines. Inger Måren from Department of Biological Sciences, UiB is also a new member.

New faces
A warm welcome to new members of the Bjerknes community!

Natasha Barbolini from Italy/South Africa, at the moment living in Sweden and working remotely from there. She is a new addition to Department of Biological Sciences where she is hired as a researcher through the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship program. Her affiliation will be in the Climate Hazards research theme. Her field is palaeoecology, palaeoclimate, extinction, biogeochemistry and biostratigraphy.

Øystein Varpe holds a permanent position as professor at the Department of Biological Sciences. His field is marine ecology and evolutionary ecology. He will be affiliated with the Polar research theme at BCCR.

|
Ashbin Jaison is a new PhD student from India at the Geophysical institute. His field is statistics and machine learning and his work will be connected to the StormRisk project and the Climate Hazards research theme.

Funding opportunities for PhD Students – BCCR PhD Forum
On Monday 15 March the PhD Forum teamed up with the CHESS research school for a seminar about funding possibilities during and after a PhD project. It turned out to be a very popular topic with 40 people attending the 2 hours seminar from all over Norway.
Mahaut and Friederike from GFI outlined the different funding pools that are available for smaller side projects while you are working on your PhD. Afterwards, we discussed what it takes to apply for the two most-relevant post-PhD grant possibilities “Marie-Curie Fellowship” and “NFRs Mobility Grant”. Stefanie Semper from GFI joint the discussion as recent successful Marie-Curie fellowship awardee and answered many questions from the audience.
It became clear that writing a proposal is a time-consuming procedure that takes a long time during the project idea development phase and afterwards, during the intensive writing period that needs good planning and far-sighted management. I am sure this seminar has sparked the idea of an own research project in one or two of the participants. It has certainly helped in clarifying what it takes if you want to pursue this path.

The Bjerknes PhD Forum is open for all PhDs affiliated with the Bjerknes Centre.
The Forum intends to create a community for international and Norwegian PhD students from different research areas during their time in Bergen.
Our aim is to facilitate exchange among new and advanced PhD students as well as to distribute and preserve knowledge about “the way things work”.
We meet about once a month to network and discuss different aspects of the academic career and/or life in Bergen. Visiting PhD students and interns are welcome to join our activities.
