Director's note

Changes in leadership

I was happy to see the applicants list for the announced position as director of the Bjerknes Centre. With six strong candidates, coming from three partner institutions and three UiB departments, the members of the board will have a difficult task to rank the candidates. If everything goes according to plans, we will know who the new director will be in mid-May.

One important task of the new director will be to oversee the process of developing our new strategic projects to start in January next year. A number of ideas are being discussed in the research themes, and some of these will be written into one-page sketches that will be evaluated by the leader group in May. If you have good ideas that you so far haven’t brought into the discussions, you should contact your research theme leader as soon as possible. May will be too late.

It is not only the Bjerknes Centre that is changing leadership these days. It is now clear that Kristin Wallevik will be the new CEO of NORCE and Margareth Hagen the new elected rector of UiB. We congratulate them with their new roles and look forward to continuing the good collaboration in the Bjerknes Centre.

We will also congratulate two other ladies, our own Dr. Lisa Griem and Dr. Fanny Ekblom Johansson, who became our PhDs number three and four this year. Lisa defended her thesis on ocean circulation changes during abrupt climate events in the warmer middle part of the last glacial period, and Fanny on more recent glacial and extreme flood variability with Folgefonna being an important study area.

Finally, I would like to wish everyone a Happy Easter holiday. Despite the ongoing pandemic and the ongoing rain showers, it is still possible to go outside to see people and perhaps practice for the Bergen City Marathon, which to my good luck is postponed again.

God påske.

Tore

Congratulations, Dr.Griem and Dr.Ekblom Johannsson!
On March 18, Lisa Griem (top right) had a successful defense on the topic of the interplay between ocean, ice and athmosphere in Greenland and the Arctic. The thesis came from the European Research Council supported #ice2ice project..Read more about her PhD here (in Norwegian): https://www.uib.no/.../samspillet-mellom-hav-og-atmosf%C3...

On March 24, Fanny Ekblom Johannsson  (top right in the centre) had a successful PhD defense on the topic of the future of glaciers and floods, focusing on Folgefonna and Ata Sund in West Greenland.

Funding opportunities for PhD Students – BCCR PhD Forum
On Monday 15 March the PhD Forum teamed up with the CHESS research school for a seminar about funding possibilities during and after a PhD project. It turned out to be a very popular topic with 40 people attending the 2 hours seminar from all over Norway.

Mahaut and Friederike from GFI outlined the different funding pools that are available for smaller side projects while you are working on your PhD. Afterwards, we discussed what it takes to apply for the two most-relevant post-PhD grant possibilities “Marie-Curie Fellowship” and “NFRs Mobility Grant”. Stefanie Semper from GFI joint the discussion as recent successful Marie-Curie fellowship awardee and answered many questions from the audience.

It became clear that writing a proposal is a time-consuming procedure that takes a long time during the project idea development phase and afterwards, during the intensive writing period that needs good planning and far-sighted management. I am sure this seminar has sparked the idea of an own research project in one or two of the participants. It has certainly helped in clarifying what it takes if you want to pursue this path.

Thank you Friederike, Mahaut and Stefanie for your time and effort during this seminar duo.

Sonja

The next online PhD Forum meeting will take place on Wednesday 7th April 4-6pm where we will have an invited speaker from Tekna introducing us to unions in Norway and Tekna in particular. Sign-up here if you want to participate: https://skjemaker.app.uib.no/view.php?id=10127480

The Bjerknes PhD Forum is open for all PhDs affiliated with the Bjerknes Centre.
The Forum intends to create a community for international and Norwegian PhD students from different research areas during their time in Bergen.
Our aim is to facilitate exchange among new and advanced PhD students as well as to distribute and preserve knowledge about “the way things work”.
We meet about once a month to network and discuss different aspects of the academic career and/or life in Bergen. Visiting PhD students and interns are welcome to join our activities.

The current PhD Forum Board members are:

Sonja Wahl (leader) – Sonja.wahl@uib.no
Maaike Zwier (co-leader) - maaike.zwier@uib.no
Elina Efstathiou (contact person for new PhDs) - Evangelia.Efstathiou@uib.no
We would like to wish you all a Happy Easter!
