OVPR launches new internal funding programs

OVPR has launched the Research Catalyst and Innovation (RCI) Program, an annual $1.5 million internal funding program that aims to catalyze multidisciplinary research and drive innovation across U-M's three campuses.  RCI features four new funding mechanisms and OVPR support that will help teams leverage internal investments to pursue external funding.

RCI replaces the Faculty Grants and Awards Program, which OVPR managed for more than 20 years. Researchers across the three U-M campuses are eligible to apply.

Large-scale Planning Grants: In FY22, OVPR plans to award up to six grants that support research teams working on large-scale, external grant proposals. These grants each range from $50,000-$100,000; teams can use this support for advanced planning and proposal readiness in response to new calls for funding opportunities that exceed $5 million. The first of three FY22 deadlines is July 1.

Annual Theme Grants: RCI will offer funding for an annual research priority. FY21-22 funding will support research and scholarship that addresses racial inequality and racial justice. The theme grants will provide more than $750,000 in funding through FY22, with individual awards ranging from $25,000-$100,000. This year's theme is supported in collaboration with the Provost’s Office as part of its Anti-Racism Initiatives. The FY21 deadline is June 1.

Two other RCI opportunities involve collaboration between OVPR and the research associate deans representing schools and colleges across U-M. OVPR will provide funding to accelerate research and strengthen innovative methods of grant development activity within the schools and colleges, supporting research associate deans in working with their teams to identify critical needs that address their unit priorities.

Registration opens for 2021 MICHR Mentoring Academy

MICHR Mentoring Academy curriculum is based on the widely used Mentor Training for Clinical and Translational Researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMER).

Each 2-hour session is designed to develop and hone mentoring skills for mentors in clinical and translational research. Participants in the sessions will learn how to better coach and counsel other less-experienced mentors, as well as enhance their own interpersonal skills for mutually beneficial mentor-mentee interactions. Participants also will address challenges facing faculty mentors via case studies, group discussions and role-plays.

Classes are limited to 25 participants. More information and registration.

Funders to speak at Michigan Medicine

American Cancer Society: Michigan Medicine will host the American Cancer Society (ACS) for a virtual event on March 24, 2-3 pm. Speaker Lynne Elmore, PhD, Senior Scientific Director for Cell Biology and Preclinical Cancer Research, oversees peer review and grants management in the areas of cancer cell biology, metastasis and microenvironment.  She will provide a firsthand look at funding opportunities available to promote scientific advancement for the benefit of cancer patients and to enhance training opportunities for cancer leaders of the future. RSVP here
 
Pew Charitable Trusts: In a virtual event April 8, 2-3 pm, learn about Pew’s Biomedical Scholars Program and the inside track on what Pew looks for in a successful submission. Hear from Kara Coleman, PhD, Project Director of Biomedical Programs at Pew, and Sarah Keane, Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Biophysics and U-M's most recent Pew Biomedical Scholar. Gary Luker, MD, chair of the Biomedical Research Council, will discuss U-M’s internal selection process for this limited submission opportunity. RSVP here

Apply for Precision Health Investigators Awards

The 2021 Precision Health Investigators Awards program anticipates funding up to eight two-year awards to support the development of precision health science, tools and datasets. Funding available per project may total up to $200,000. The awards are open to U-M full-time faculty members with a primary appointment in research, instructional (tenure) or clinical tracks. Pre-proposals are due May 12.

RECAP for K-12 partnerships

In 2018, the U-M’s Center for Educational Outreach, the School of Education, and the Edward Ginsberg Center formed a partnership to strengthen and streamline their K-12 services and opportunities for the U-M community as well as provide clearer direction and guidance to K-12 schools and educational partners in Michigan. Later named “RECAP” to highlight the guiding principles for K-12 partnerships, these Centers’ collaboration shows the commitment to working with our U-M colleagues, K-12 schools and students to advance student learning and partnerships through the RECAP principles of Relationships, Equity, Compliance, Awareness and Power.

The RECAP portal highlights the services and support that each of the three U-M units offers to facilitate connections to K-12 communities.
