It’s been nearly a year since the first COVID-19 cases were confirmed in Allegheny County, and while there are some positive developments — like Pittsburgh Public School staff receiving vaccinations at Heinz Field — this is far from an anniversary we’d like to celebrate.
Still, challenges continue for Pennsylvania nursing homes and the vaccine sign-up process can be bewildering for many. Small businesses, especially in the restaurant, hospitality, and arts industries are struggling. Conditions of the pandemic have exacerbated the inequalities present in our communities, and many of our neighbors have experienced tremendous loss, a grief so heavy we must collectively help each other carry.
I really enjoyed this piece by PublicSource that highlights local healthcare workers’ stories of faith during the pandemic, which can serve as inspiration no matter what you believe in.
For me, this moment a year ago wasn’t the first time I woke up to my world flipped upside down. A little backstory on your newest newsletter writer: I was 17 when I was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor, a battle that shaped me into the resilient soul I am today. While it didn’t feel like it at the time, I like to think that experience helped prepare me for the year of the pandemic. So I will leave you with this bit of wisdom: In great uncertainty, we can always rely on the predictability that change will come. And I know this to be true … there will be better days.
My ask to you: wear a mask, love your neighbors, support local businesses, and treat yourself like Mr. Rogers would — with unwavering kindness.
