Female ASU faculty share challenges, triumphs and what gives them hope about the future of women in academia

Bold. Inspirational. Fearless.

These are just a few of the words that female faculty in The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences use to describe women in higher education careers.

At Arizona State University, female faculty make up almost half of the overall faculty population: As of fall 2018, 48% of faculty were women. In The College, 46% of faculty were women as of 2018–19. Year over year, these percentages have continued to increase, with similar trends seen at universities nationwide.

In celebration of Women’s History Month, female faculty from The College shared challenges they have faced, triumphs they have experienced and what gives them hope about the future of women in academia.

Undergraduate students: We want to hear from you!

This week marks one year since our normal lives stopped in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. During this last year, we have all experienced major changes to our lives.

To help understand the effect of COVID-19 on our academic community, our school has created a COVID-19 Care Committee with faculty, staff, and student representatives. The committee's goal is to listen to the various members of SGSUP to understand how COVID-19 has affected each of us, as well as to propose strategies to help SGSUP respond to key issues and build a supportive environment in the future.

Please take a few moments to share your thoughts and experiences via our survey found here. The purpose of the survey is to learn about how SGSUP's undergraduate community is coping with the pandemic, changes to online learning, and more.

Our school will also be hosting two listening sessions. You can find more information about those within the survey.

Spring 2021 School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning Colloquium Series

Next week, we are excited to continue our spring semester colloquium series as we welcome Dr. Roger Pielke, Jr., from the University of Colorado Boulder.

Dr. Pielke will be sharing his talk "A Science Integrity Crisis in Climate Research."

Date: Monday, March 15, 2021
Time: 2:00 - 3:30 p.m.
Location: https://asu.zoom.us/j/85387766772

About the talk:
Human-caused climate change is real and aggressive policy action is warranted. However, a significant amount of climate research -- in physical sciences, impacts and economics -- relies on scenarios of the future that are outdated and implausible. These scenarios dominate assessment reports of the IPCC and U.S. National Climate Assessment, as well as the underlying peer-reviewed literature and also can be found in influential analyses that inform public and private sector decision making, such as the "social cost of carbon" estimates of the U.S. government. Beyond the practical implications, climate science may face a severe credibility crisis if these issues of scientific integrity are not soon addressed, which will be extremely difficult. This is a story of research integrity -- how we secure it and the challenges to correcting course when we get off track.
