Events Commemorating the 10th Anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake

Next week marks the 10th anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake, which devastated the Tohoku region of Japan. Now, almost ten years later, the people of Tohoku have rebuilt their homes and communities. Evacuees have returned home. Agricultural, forestry, and fishery production has recovered. Though there are still challenges, the region has bounced back with the indomitable spirit of the people.

As we think about the people of Japan on this anniversary, we'd like to bring your attention to two events that will remember the victims of this tragedy, reflect on the recovery of Tohoku, and bring our two countries together again in remembrance. The full details about these two events are available below.

Footprints and Footsteps

Tonight begins a this weeklong online event to look back at the events of March 11, 2011, and efforts to recover and rebuild in the 10 years since. Featuring a number of documentaries focusing on those affected by the disasters arising out of the events of that day, both Japanese and non-Japanese, especially JET Program participants and alumni, they will look back from this ten-year mark to remember what happened, and look at today and tomorrow to get a sense of what has been accomplished and what the future holds.

There are real-time broadcasting film screenings and Live Q&A sessions with the directors each night. The event also features panel discussions on sister city relationships, Japanese food culture and health, and  the future of Tohoku. You can also access each film anytime from March 5th 7PM to March 14th 9PM (EST) through the "Individual Screening" links. *Please note that Nourishing Japan is only accessible until March 12th  at 9PM (EST).

Remembering March 11, 2011:

Looking Back, Looking Forward

Wednesday, March 10, 2021 at 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM ET
On Wednesday, March 10 (March 11 in Japan), let us come together and honor the memories of all those lost on, and in the wake of, the March 11, 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. Join the many U.S.-Japan organizations who have partnered to commemorate this tragic disaster by remembering the victims and reflecting on how much Japan, and especially the people of Tohoku, have overcome. By coming together again, we can recapture the spirit of kizuna and tomodachi that prevailed then, and that provided the basis for goodwill that set the course for a decade of ever stronger U.S.-Japan relations.
