Compassionate Leadership is a Year-Round Commitment
March 4, 2021

First, From the Heart

As we round out our first year of lockdown, social distancing, and work from home, we have all been profoundly affected by the pandemic. March moves us into International Women’s History Month, right after we devoted February to Black History Month. Other months on the US calendar celebrate Asian, Irish, Hispanic, Native American, and LGBTQ+ communities.

While these are wonderful opportunities to honor our distinct roots and identities, compassionate leaders celebrate our differences and commonalities every day. It’s not enough to simply be aware and appreciative of a person’s heritage, orientation, or other distinguishing characteristics. The core question is how do we lead to the benefit of all? Not just those in our sphere of influence, but let’s ask ourselves how we bring compassion to all people around the globe. This is how we become one human race.

A Year of Equity for All

February is over, and with it, so is Black History Month. The significance and meaning of Black History Month shouldn’t be limited to one month a year – the shortest month of the year at that. The time is right to take steps to turn Black History Month into a full year of supporting equity for all. Read more.

Practice Matters

Clarity and Focus

What do we stand for? What do we care so deeply about that it inspires us to action? Anchoring into our truth reveals our unique gifts and how we can contribute as only we can. This clarity of vision and mission is such a powerful awareness. In every moment we have a choice, and choosing how and where to focus our energy in alignment with our north star allows us to grow with grace and ease.

Clarity and focus are especially useful for the long haul. While we can muster up the motivation to address most challenges on a short-term basis, we are truly tested in life to sustain our focused intentions for a long, uninterrupted period of time. Make life a practice, and you will find the strength and discipline to carry on. That said, remember to be kind to yourself. Practice requires patience, and infinite amounts of self-compassion. When can we practice? Always!
