Lizard Tail Pinned to the Bulletin

If you're in Townsville, make sure to stop by Diffraction Studio in Flinders Street to take part in NQ RASN's recovery project, Lizard Tail! Alongside local artists you can join the workshops on the following dates:
  • 11 April 2021, 10am-12pm
Based on the work of and led by artist Hiromi Tango alongside coordinator Rachel Cook, Lizard Tail is inspired by the process of a lizard’s unique ability to drop and then regrow its tail as a metaphor for how we might be able to do the same with painful memories and emotions, as we ourselves rebuild. As a resilience and recovery project, NQ RASN would like to work with as many people as possible to grow the tail over the next six months.

Recently, Lizard Tail was one of seven regional arts projects in Queensland that have been successful recipients of the latest round of Community Grants as part of the Australian Government’s Regional Arts Fund, administered in Queensland by Flying Arts Alliance Inc.

Additionally, if you can't make it to the workshops but would still like to support Lizard Tail, please get in touch with project coordinator, Rachel Cook, to donate any old clothes, foam, yarn, textiles or fabric to the project.
If you would like more information about the Lizard Tail project or to donate materials, please contact Rachel Cook on 0408 635 998.

Even if you have some experience in performance or performance writing, this course gives you so much more than just the basics.

Write Sparks 101 offers an exciting skills development opportunity for aspiring young writers aged 14 to 17 years living in North Queensland.

Central Queensland launches New Indigenous Art Centre

The first stage of the Woorabinda Arts and Cultural Centre was launched in Duaringa in Central Queensland early this month with over 80 people in attendance. This exciting milestone is a first for the First Nations community of Woorabinda and for Central Queensland. Artists in the region now have a dedicated art gallery and workshop space to create, showcase and retail their work in.

Central Queensland Regional Arts Services Network (CQRASN) is excited to have supported this wonderful initiative in assisting with community consultation, art workshops and consultation over the last 18 months. The converted CWA Hall in the township of Duaringa about an hour west of Rockhampton has primarily been a project of Nickeema Williams and Julie Barratt from Woorabinda Arts and CQ RASN, and thanks to an innovative partnership between Woorabinda Aboriginal Shire Council, BMA  and CQ RASN/CQU.

The launch event marked the completion of the first stage of the project which is the Art Gallery space, with two more developmental stages being rolled out in the next two years.
For more information, visit the centre's new Facebook page for gallery opening times for anyone travelling through Duaringa.

The Mark of the Highlife

The Toowoomba Arts Footprint has welcomed the first of three artists who were successful in their application for a $20,000 Artist in Residence opportunity as part of a residency program from SWQ RASN.

Aimed at investing in the future of the arts in Queensland regions through artist opportunities and community engagement, the program has uplifted the work of Cara-Ann Simpson, a Curator at Hervey Bay Regional Gallery. A long-time local Goombungee resident returning to Toowoomba as an artist, curator, consultant and cultural heritage expert, Cara is a multidisciplinary artist who has exhibited broadly outside and within Australia.

Cara-Ann’s project, Spectral Sensoria, centres on exploring sensory perception and how people engage with their environment. Participants will have the opportunity to connect with Country, and become immersed in their environment through educational, creative and meditative methods through a series of field trips and studio workshops.

“Each discovery I make has its own story about where I found it: what I heard, smelled, saw and felt, as well as how I reacted to the space,” she says. Audiences will be enticed by interesting smells, tempted by curious sounds and engaged by beautiful images.  A collab including high school students, USQ students and community members, participants will create individual artworks and collaborative sound and olfactory installations which showcase Toowoomba region’s natural, environmental, and cultural historic and living heritage, as well as having creative outcomes.
Spectral Sensoria is funded by Arts Queensland and South West Queensland Regional Arts as part of the Toowoomba Arts Footprint Artists in Residence program. Expressions of Interest are now invited for participants in this innovative project which will run from 9 April-22 April as part of Cara-Ann’s month-long residency.

Rocking Out Up North

The first recorded act of Reconciliation between Europeans and Australian Aboriginal peoples celebrated and commemorated in a major Public Art installation up north.

Despite the torrential rain, and with a crane and a semi-trailer to contend with, artist and sculptor Braham Stevens invited a small group of stakeholders, including Traditional Owners, architects and the project management team to witness the installation of his artworks at Reconciliation Rocks. The Traditional Owners had worked closely with Braham to help him to share the Indigenous version of the events that took place at the site between Captain Cook and the Aboriginal Elders in 1770, and were overjoyed to see the final result of their collaboration.

With construction now complete, the site is fully open to the public! Visitors are encouraged to enjoy the park and to share their experience of Reconciliation Rocks, to help broadcast the special shared history of Waymburr/Cooktown as the site of the first recorded act of Reconciliation, across Australia and around the world.

The official opening of Reconciliation Rocks is programmed in June, during the Reconciliation Rocks festival, which is part of Cooktown and Cape York Expo 2021.
A Good Cause for an Amazing Race

When The Lost Art, a group of traditional Outback leathercrafters organised by  Red Ridge, got the call to join the Amazing Race Mental Health & Wellbeing Expo, they jumped at the opportunity!

This month, Red Ridge hosted The Lost Art leathercrafting stall as well as a set of two workshops, teaching locals and visitors to the area the fundamentals of traditional Outback leather-art. From handbags to leather belts, there was something for everyone to take home – and learn through the outstanding leathercrafting teacher Rhys Tee and project support officer Gretchen Hayman.

The Lost Art is about reviving the traditional ways of Outback leathercrafting, but also about bringing Outback communities together to celebrate their identity and heritage. The Lost Art has enabled people from all walks of life to discover the arts— and the community around them. The Lost Art is all about helping to sustain and nourish the mental health and wellbeing of the Outback, one leather-art at a time.

Heard the Call

Recently, RASN FNQ was able to visit the 'Call of the Running Tide' exhibition at Cairn's NorthSite Contemporary Arts gallery.

A sculpture and multimedia group exhibition, 'Call of the Running Tide' responds to the real and dire circumstances that humanity faces due to escalating ecological and climate change.

The artwork pictured (Limpets, 2020) is from artist Andrea Collisson, whose work deals in marine debris, cleaning beaches and transforming ugliness. Says Collisson, "This work is made with a variety of plastic lids I have collected from local beaches. While I enjoy making optical experiences with the colours and engaging with my artist predecessors through my art, my primary concerns are environmental and I’m an avid beach cleaner.  Up-cycling marine debris into art works has a moral dimension for me. My art practice is engaged with caring for our environment and saving it from our bad habits. It’s a small contribution but given the crises our planet is facing. I believe we must all try to play a part."

Call of the Running Tide is on until 1 April 2021.
Minecrafting in Cairns

SECTOR NEWS
Life for Creatives since COVID

As the demand increases for updated data from the visual arts and craft sector, NAVA is collecting feedback which shows if COVID-19 public health orders affecting travel, gatherings and participation are still having impact on the work, practice and regular income for artists, arts workers and arts organisations.

If you're an artist or arts worker whose situation continues to be impacted by coronavirus management, help contribute to the national understanding of this ongoing crisis and represent them in detail so that the federal government is in the best position to consider urgent policy and funding responses.

Statistics collected via this survey will be shared with the sector so you can also use the data for your own purposes. Complete this 3 minute survey by 12:00pm Wednesday 24 March 2021 and be heard!
Archie Goes Long

This month, Cairns Art Gallery will make history becoming the first Queensland venue to host the Archibald Prize.

Traditionally, the Archibald only travels between New South Wales and one Victorian venue. But this year, the Art Gallery of NSW has selected Cairns among many other contending galleries to host Australia’s most prestigious portraiture exhibition.

Gallery Director Andrea Churcher said the decision is a testament to the city's “growing national reputation and rich artistic heritage.”

Nation Dance Returns

'Nation Dance', the first event of its kind, empowered around one-hundred Indigenous nations to move simultaneously on Country back in 2019.

After an outpouring of gratitude for the inaugural dance, organisers hoped the event would become an annual occurrence, however the pandemic delayed the event for 2020.

Now, as restrictions ease, Nation Dance is able to go ahead this year on April 3, expressing a powerful pronouncement of culture and healing through dance. The event encourages First Nations people all over Australia to dance simultaneously on their Country, connecting Indigenous people to their culture and each other.

Capping Things Off!

The CAPS Short Film Tour begins its travels across Central Queensland’s cities next month!

Bringing a selection of the international short films, whilst celebrating the best of Central Queensland’s filmmakers, the 2021 screening location is Gladstone's stunning East Shores 1B at their brand new huge Outdoor Screen.

Sit back, relax and enjoy short films from the region's filmmakers including Yeppoon and Gladstone. The event will follow COVID safe protocols with check required, and cleaning supplies will be available.

RESOURCES
Inspiring Inclusivity

The Gender Matters Taskforce and Screen Australia announced this month two key initiatives for 2021 aimed at supporting women and gender diverse practitioners in the screen industry.

“Gender Matters was created to address the underutilisation of female talent in key creative roles in the Australian screen industry, and we hope these initiatives will work towards greater gender parity by connecting with, supporting and empowering people currently underrepresented within the industry," says Screen Australia’s Head of Content Sally Caplan.

The first initiative is Gender Matters Webinars, an exciting series of webinars hosted by Screenworks whilst the second is Gender Matters Connect, a mentoring program that will connect women and gender diverse screen practitioners with industry mentors, delivered by Women in Film and Television Australia (WIFT Australia) and Screen Australia.
