Community
Dear Parents/Carers

The word ‘Community’ is in the school name, and this week it could not have been more apt.

When we made the decision that we were going to facilitate 985 student Covid tests on Monday, we knew we needed your support. In the media, there have been lots of reports about and from schools who have verbalised their pleasure at achieving 75% consent/sign up for tests from their community – how about 96%!

I would like to publically thank you, the parents/carers, for the amazing job you have done in supporting  the school and getting our consent/sign up to 96% - something that will ultimately help to keep all those who learn, teach and work at John Hanson safe.

I have frequently said that successful schools are a partnership of school, parent and student. This has never been so true through the tough times of lockdown, and now when the actions of us all will ultimately mean that we can return to normality – I cannot thank you enough for being such an integral and support element of this partnership.

Stay safe and well and enjoy the weekend with your children.

Thursday 4th March was World Book Day - a little different to our normal shenanigans of dressing up, in school competitions, reading aloud and talking all about books face-to-face! We did not let that stop us though!

Over the course of the day we received wonderful videos from our staff talking about their favourite books and their current reads; there were competitions running remotely of which we are so excited to see some more entries and decide on prize winners; a wonderful cake was baked by Charlotte Pagett, a lovely poem about getting lost in a book was written by Maisy Hillman and a fantastic book illustration from Coen Milsom. Thank you to everyone who took part in some way, shape or form. You can find lots of entries, videos and other information on our new Instagram page @jhcs_literacy.

World Book Day stresses the importance of reading and how vital it is for our young people - but this goes beyond World Book Day itself. Simply by reading more on a regular basis students will find improvement in their vocabulary knowledge, gain confidence in reading questions for examinations, explore cultures and find greater communication skills.

Did you know about Borrow Box from Hampshire libraries? There are thousands of eBooks and Audiobooks just a tap away from your enjoyment! Even with libraries being closed currently there are still so many ways you can get your hands on a book!

Just a reminder that our LRC will be open from Tuesday for students to enjoy. Please encourage your child to come and borrow a book.

Happy reading!

Getting lost in a book by Maisey Hillman

The front cover looks interesting and catches my eye
I have loads of books so I should walk on by
But before I know it the books in my hand
Another adventure to a wonderland

As I open the book I know I will find
Drama and excitement to transport my mind
A place to go but who knows where
ill just let my imagination take me there

I’m lost in the story pages like an invisible shield
Hopefully soon it shall all be revealed

Time fly’s  by and I’m  not aware I look up at the mirror
To check I’m still there
WORLD BOOK DAY BOOK TOKENS

When you return to school on Tuesday, I have Book Tokens ready for you to collect from the LRC desk for you to claim your FREE WORLD BOOK DAY BOOK by 28th March.

Books are available in Tesco, Asda and WH Smiths.
Yesterday, the staff at John Hanson spent time reading/reviewing their favourite books, I read “Stick Man” to my little grand-daughter, Ophelia, she loves that story, she is always asking me to read it to her!
Looking forward to seeing you all on Tuesday.

Mrs Coward, LRC Manager.
Word of the Week:

Please see below for the ‘Word of the Week’. These words have specifically been chosen as they are both useful and sophisticated whilst encouraging challenge and extended vocabulary use. Please challenge your child (and yourself!) to use this week’s word as much as possible at home, in conversations, and in their work!

Why at John Hanson do we care how important it is for our EAL students to get motivated during these difficult times?

I hope everyone is as pleased as we are that students will be returning to school on Tuesday, 9th March 2021.

We understand that returning to school for many children since lockdown began, may be a strange or worrying time for them, it is normal that we feel anxious.

We recognise that supporting children’s physical and mental wellbeing during these difficult times is a key priority for many of you. Over the last few weeks I have collected and shared lots of useful ideas, all focused on making sure that whilst being away from school, students could carry on having a mentally healthy approach.

This is my last published article regarding this topic, I am looking forward to meeting you on Tuesday but in the meantime, I would love to see what you have been doing to support your wellbeing. Get involved  by taking pictures, design a poster, write a review of a book that have inspired you, do let me know by sending it to:
Crissie.Ferreira@jhanson.hants.sch.uk

Keeping motivated remains a challenge. No matter how hard things are, keep going!
