🏈 The forgotten story of Pittsburgh’s ‘Tom Brady’

Plus, introducing the Pittsburgh Brewery Diversity Council.

Happy Friday!

The surest sign of spring begins today: Page Dairy Mart is opening for the season. The beloved South Side ice cream shop is celebrating 70 years, Good Food Pittsburgh wrote.

“We survived a flood in 1936, an explosion in 1958, and now a worldwide pandemic in 2020,” the shop shared on Facebook last year. “Pittsburgh, we’re only here because of you.”

Now, today’s news: More details on vaccine clinics for teachers, an introduction to the Pittsburgh Brewery Diversity Council, “Tom Brady’s” Pittsburgh connection, how your spring cleaning can help Tree Pittsburgh, and news about The Incline’s new director (scroll all the way to the bottom for that). All that in a four-minute read. But it did take us way longer than four minutes to write, so please pitch in as an Incline member if you can to make this newsletter possible.

What Pittsburgh is talking about

Pittsburgh’s as pretty as a picture… which might be why there are so many of them. 😍 | Tag #theinclinepgh to be featured in our Instagram of the Day. (📸: @majokophoto)

🎨 More public art is on the way. The city is accepting applications from artists for $500,000 in projects in Frick, Schenley, Riverview, Highland, and Emerald View Parks. (90.5 WESA)

3 things to make you smile

🏈 Terry Bradshaw … a.k.a. Tom Brady? Apparently back in 1983 (when the real Tom Brady was just six years old), the legendary Steelers quarterback used the fake name “Tom Brady” to check into a Louisiana hospital for elbow surgery. (KDKA-TV)

🍔 Take a moment to ketchup on this story about Ruth N. Shuster, who was crowned “Queen for a Day” at McDonald’s Big Mac Museum in North Huntingdon on her 100th birthday this week. She’s worked at the fast food restaurant for 27 years and says: “No way I’m going to retire. I love it here. I like my job, meeting people.” (TribLive)

🐶 Meet Red, an 11-year-old Boxer and “a total couch potato.” Maybe your couch is the one for him? Here’s more about the Pittsburgh Pet of the Week and how to adopt a pet through Animal Friends. (Pittsburgh Magazine)

One more thing …

If you’re doing some spring cleaning this weekend, keep your eyes peeled for metal tools you could part with.

Enjoy your weekend, and we’ll see you back here on Tuesday.

P.S. It’s my last Incline newsletter, and I’m excited for you to meet The Incline’s new director on Tuesday. As for me, I’m not going far. I’m going to support The Incline and its four sister publications. Yup, there are awesome local newsletters just like this in Portland, Seattle, Miami, and Orlando. So if you have friends and family in those cities, tell ’em to sign up! And forward this newsletter to a friend while you’re at it. Thanks for reading, as always. 💛
