Dear Tallis family
We launch into a very exciting week as we finally bring our community together again. What a long time it has been! Please continue to look at the website so that you can keep up-to-date with all of our organisation.

Despite the frequent national panics, we will never talk about ‘catch-up’ or ‘recovery’ at Tallis. We will work with all of our children to make sure that when they leave us they are ready for adult life. We educate so that they may understand the world and change it for the better, pandemic or no pandemic.

On we go!

Yours,
Carolyn Roberts, Head
Don't forget to read the latest blog post in Mrs Roberts writes, a regular column about school life.
This half term's Tallis Habits focus is disciplined. The return to school will give us an opportunity to really focus on the discipline of crafting and improving, reflecting critically and developing new techniques for understanding the world so that we can change it for the better. Thank you for everything you are doing at home to support our work.

Word of the Week - Renaissance
Our next Word of the Week is Renaissance, a word with both French and Latin roots. We thought it was a fitting word for next week, as it literally means ‘re-birth.’ Try and use this word in your lessons and outside of school. Remember that you can get positive points for using vocabulary well in your subject areas.
Kids read more when we Turn On The Subtitles
Turn On The Subtitles is a national campaign to help parents to double the chance of their children becoming good readers through encouraging them to turn on the subtitles on TV and other videos they might be watching. Here is Stephen Fry to explain the benefits of turning on the subtitles in more detail: www.turnonthesubtitles.org/parents.

Based on an academic study of 2,350 children, 34% became good readers with schooling alone. But when exposed to 30 minutes a week of subtitled film songs, that proportion more than doubled to 70% - a copy of the study can be found here. There are lots of studies about the benefits of subtitles. This is just one.

Go to turnonthesubtitles.org/research to find out more.
