Help Prevent School Budget Cuts
Seattle Public Schools and other districts in the state are experiencing declines in enrollment this year, and in the upcoming school year. Declines in enrollment mean less funding and fewer teachers - Roosevelt is projected to lose 7 teachers next year. Additionally, since state transportation funding is dependent on transportation used in previous years, there may be a decline in state funding for transportation just as schools reopen. We need the state to step in and keep districts whole during this time of uncertainty. Please email your legislators, and the legislators in charge of crafting the budget, and tell them that they need to preserve school funding at pre-Covid levels. Seattle Council PTSA has drafted a sample letter that you can use, which includes legislator email addresses, but personalized letters are very helpful.

Vaccinations for Educators and Staff
On Tuesday, Governor Inslee announced that educators and licensed childcare workers can begin to receive vaccinations immediately under Washington’s Phase 1B-1. Staff may schedule an appointment at any COVID-19 vaccination clinic in the state. Visit DOH's online Washington state clinic locator to find a clinic.

Is Our Building Ready for In-Person?

Service Learning Graduation Requirement Temporarily Suspended
On Feb. 10, the Seattle School Board voted to temporarily suspend the service learning graduation requirement, which requires seniors to complete 60 hours of service learning, for this year’s graduating seniors. Students will not be required to submit waivers for the service learning requirement in order to graduate.
Revised Superintendent Procedure: Student Attendance
In Dec. 2020 the Superintendent Procedure about student attendance was revised. Added criteria for an excused student absence include: a reason of faith or conscience, school route weather conditions, district-provided transportation delays, and student participation in one civic engagement activity per semester.
Language and Translation Supports
To make sure all our families have access to the latest fall 2020-21 updates and resources, SPS has created web pages in each of our community's top six languages: Amharic, Chinese, Somali, Spanish, Tagalog, and Vietnamese.

Seattle Skills Center Info Session -March 18th at 5:30pm
The Seattle Skills Center is a FREE SPS program that prepares and advances high school juniors and seniors for college, career, and life. Skills Center provides this training through regular school year courses and our summer program. Courses offer 3 high school credits for one year course completion, industry recognized certification, advanced learning, and college credit. All Access Arts Streaming
The Creative Advantage is expanding the ALL ACCESS Arts Stream and this March and April they’re offering free high-quality, accessible, live, out-of-school time arts classes for students. All classes are free and advanced registration is required. Learn more!
Summer STEM Institute
The Summer STEM Institute is a six-week virtual summer program for high school students. The program was started last summer by educators, students, and graduates from Stanford, Harvard, and MIT to continue educational opportunities during COVID-19. The program consists of three parts:
- Research and data science bootcamp
- Masterclass lecture series
- Mentored research project

KUOW Summer 2021 Online Intro to Radio Journalism Workshop (PAID)
Students aged 15-18 will learn radio journalism and storytelling skills, build confidence and work with others while creating a radio story about a person in their home or community. Apply by March 9.
Seattle Seahawks Player's Equality & Justice For All Scholarship Fund
The Seahawks Players Equality & Justice for All Scholarship Fund aims to build a more compassionate and inclusive society by supporting career opportunities for students who have overcome significant adversity. Preference will be given to students of color and first-generation college students. The scholarships will be renewable for a total of 2-years or 4-years depending on the certification or degree the student pursues. Eligible expenses include tuition and fees. Deadline for applications is March 15.
Apply to be a Conservation Crew Camp Member - PAID
Earn a $300/week stipend and $50/week bonus and high school credit while gaining job skills. Northwest Youth Corps' Youth Camping crews combine education and job skills with outdoor adventure for 16-19-year-olds. With the guidance of experienced field staff, youth crew members work on conservation, reforestation, and recreation projects, while developing leadership skills and learning how to work as a team. Quest Bridge: College Prep Scholars Program – High School Juniors
The College Prep Scholars Program equips high-achieving high school juniors from low-income backgrounds with the knowledge, confidence, and resources to apply to top colleges. College Prep Scholars are historically five times more likely than other applicants to receive full four-year scholarships through the National College Match. Application deadline: March 24th.

Boys Lacrosse
Registration is now open for the Roosevelt Boys Lacrosse 2021 Spring Season. Early registration runs until March 8th. Practices begin on April 19 and the season will run through June 19. Boys lacrosse is an ASB club sport. Interested players should visit the team website to register. Questions can be directed to Coach Drew Wright. Scholarships are available upon request.

ATTENTION all Roosevelt Musicians Who Have Played in BAND!
There is a spot for anyone who wants to be in a Band RHS. Any questions may be directed to Mr. Brown.
- 9th graders this year who did not get their request to be in Concert Band can register for Symphonic Band for the 2021-22 school year.
- Incoming 9th Graders should register for Concert Band. There is NO Audition required!
- Rising Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors may register for Symphonic Band, or audition for Wind Ensemble. Students wishing to audition for Wind Ensemble may e-mail Mr. Brown or reply to rhs@riderband.org
- Current (non-senior) students in Wind Ensemble should return for next year.
- 10th, 11th and 12th grade percussion students should register for Percussion Ensemble.

Protect School Children From Lead Exposure
Washington State PTA supports House Bill 1139, which would pay for and require testing for lead, and remediation of public school outlets (faucets, etc.) that have elevated levels of lead. The fix can be as simple as installing filters on contaminated faucets. Lead can negatively impact children’s physical and behavioral health, even at very low levels. Please protect our children from lead exposure by supporting HB 1139. The easiest way to do this is by clicking "Comment on this bill" when you click on the link to the bill.
Washington State PTA Legislative Report
The legislature is currently voting on bills that would affect government policy. The deadline for these policy bills is March 9th. After that, the legislature will take up the state budget. Bills that are still active include ones that address graduation requirements and close the digital divide. Read more about bills still active this session in the weekly WSPTA Legislative Report.
WSPTA Action Alert on Gun Safety
Every other day, a Washington child or youth dies at the hand of a firearm. High-capacity magazines make shootings more deadly and allow shooters to fire more rounds, faster. The Washington Post estimates that more than 240,000 American students have now experienced gun violence at school, including nearly 7,000 students in Washington. We have the opportunity to restrict the access of these most deadly weapons in SSB 5078, which would limit the sale and transfer of high-capacity magazines over 17 rounds. This common-sense legislation was requested by our Attorney General’s office. Please click here to take action and contact your representatives and ask for their support.

Show How Covid Has Impacted Your Life
Mission InspirEd, a student-run nonprofit from Seattle, is sponsoring Tales of Quarantine, a free nationwide initiative challenging students ages 6-18 to showcase COVID’s impact through a wide variety of artistic expressions. The competition will span from February 22nd through March 21st and cover three categories of art: Media, Visual, and Writing. Students are encouraged to submit an original piece of artwork that showcases their creativity and skills, and can win up to $1,000 and be featured on the news.

Executive skills are critical to the acquisition of academic skills, but, more importantly, they are the skills students need to get things done. They are brain-based skills such as task initiation, sustained attention, working memory, planning, organization, and goal-directed persistence that are absolutely critical to school success. Dr. Peg Dawson, co-author of the books Smart but Scattered and Smart but Scattered Teens, will describe how these skills develop throughout childhood and suggest strategies parents can use to help children acquire the critical skills they need to be successful students. 2021 US District Court and Ninth Circuit Essay Contest
This year’s essay and video contest asks students to consider a fundamental question—“how should we as a society strike the appropriate balance within the framework of our Constitution between safeguarding our rights and fulfilling our responsibilities to each other?” Students should focus on important events in American history and global events that have challenged us to find a balance between inalienable individual rights and collective responsibilities to each other. Narrative 4 is a global organization driven by artists, shaped by educators and led by students. Our core methodology, the story exchange, is designed to help students understand that their voices, stories, actions and lives matter, and that they have the power to change, rebuild and revolutionize systems. Families can pick up breakfasts and lunches Monday-Friday, 11:15AM-1:15PM at 40 area schools, including Bryant Elementary, Sand Point Elementary, Eckstein Middle School, Nathan Hale High School, and Olympic Hills Elementary. Guide for Urgent Care
Not sure whether you should take your child or teen to urgent care or the emergency room: Seattle Children’s has a new guide in English, Spanish and Arabic. Urgent care doesn't do well visits, sports physicals, or return to play after concussion. The Neighborcare Health Center at Roosevelt offers both remote and scheduled, in-person visits to students. Volunteers Needed at SPS Schools
If you are in a position to add a volunteer commitment to your life in support of students most adversely affected by COVID-19, please consider volunteering remotely to support students and educators. Training on using MS Teams (our virtual classroom platform) will be provided - you do not need to have this software on your computer. Please view the most urgent volunteer support needs here.
