Dear SDSU parents and families,

We have wonderful news to share.

In a message shared today with 2020 and 2021 graduates (December 2019, May 2020, August 2020, December 2020, May 2021, and August 2021), the SDSU Commencement Committee has confirmed dates for planned in-person celebrations. In addition to having in-person ceremonies in May, graduates, along with their family and friends, will have the option to attend virtual and live-streamed programs.

If public health restrictions reverse, and we are unable to move forward with the preferred in-person commencement option, SDSU will instead host a drive-through commencement celebration, called a “CARmencement.”

More details are below. Information about the event location, limited guest policies, and ticketing details will be shared with graduates no later than April 1, 2021.

Thank you,

Dear SDSU Graduates,

We would like to share our congratulations with each of you for reaching this important milestone!

The SDSU Commencement Committee has been hard at work exploring different options for celebrating the classes of 2020 and 2021. Over the past several months, the SDSU Commencement Committee has conducted multiple student focus groups and surveyed our future graduates. A majority of students have expressed a preference for an in-person event while others preferred virtual. We are committed to providing you with both options.

The committee has also worked in close consultation with county public health officials in an effort to find the best possible ways to celebrate our graduates.

At this time, we are excited to share that SDSU is planning for an in-person commencement option for graduates and guests. This would be hosted at an outdoor off-campus venue, with more details below. This option is dependent on state and county public health guidelines.

We will also be sharing details with SDSU Imperial Valley students about ceremony plans during the week of March 8.

If vaccination and public health conditions worsen or reverse, and we are unable to move forward with the preferred in-person commencement option, SDSU will instead host a drive-through commencement celebration, called a “CARmencement.”

Information about the specific event type, limited guest policies, and venue locations will be shared with graduates this month, and no later than April 1, 2021.

Save the Date!

The commencement schedule for the preferred in-person option is as follows:

  • Tuesday, May 25, 2021:
    • 9:00 a.m. – College of Education
    • 2:00 p.m. – College of Sciences

  • Wednesday, May 26, 2021:
    • 8:00 a.m. – College of Arts and Letters
    • 1:00 p.m. – College of Engineering
    • 5:30 p.m. – Fowler College of Business

  • Thursday, May 27, 2021:
    • 9:00 a.m. – College of Health and Human Services
    • 2:00 p.m. – College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts

This option is not yet final, as it is dependent on state and county public health guidelines which are soon to be updated and shared.

As shared above, if we are unable to move forward with the preferred in-person option due to a reversal of public health conditions, SDSU will instead host a drive-through commencement celebration, called a “CARmencement.” This interactive event will allow you to drive through campus in your vehicle along with friends and family and be cheered on and celebrated by faculty and staff. You will be individually recognized, move across a stage, have your name read aloud, and have a professional photo taken.

This alternative option would be open to graduates beginning Saturday, May 22, through Friday, May 28. Graduates would need to RSVP to the event, and more information will be shared if this option is required going forward.

Additional Celebration to be Held Virtually

Regardless of the decision made about the in-person location, SDSU is committed to providing a virtual option for those who prefer. Additionally, any in-person ceremonies will also be livestreamed online.

Graduates will be able to create personalized graduate slides with a photo, message and audio of their name being read for the virtual commencement. These slides will be displayed on the virtual ceremony pages along with remarks from SDSU President Adela de la Torre, college deans, and additional speakers.
