GREENVILLE HOUSING FUND RECEIVES TD BANK GRANT

The Greenville Housing Fund is excited to be named one of the 32 recipients of the 15th Annual Housing For Everyone grant program from the TD Charitable Foundation, the charitable giving arm of TD Bank.  This grant will be used to fund the Home Again partnership, a collaboration between GHF and United Housing Connections that work to identity families with school-aged children who are living in tenuous temporary situations in local motels.  The program will then help these families transition into safe, stable, long-term rentals and will assist them with long-term coaching and incentives while also connecting them to resources in the community.  Additionally, landlord-participants will receive an insurance-like guarantee of rent payments through a master lease with the program.  In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic had an immense and disproportionate impact on those most vulnerable, including renters, and that is why the Home Again program seeks to alleviate some of the crises caused by the pandemic.  In total, TD Charitable Foundation awarded $4.9 million for the 2020 Housing For Everyone program, as part of the more than $20 million that TD has allocated to help strengthen community resilience and COVID-19 recovery through the TD Community Resilience Initiative.  A full list of the Housing For Everyone recipients can be found here.

HOUSING FOR SENIORS

As Greenville continues to grow, the need for affordable senior housing will grow with it.  The area’s population is aging at the same time that it is becoming more attractive to retirees.  Because of this, the market for affordable senior housing is tight.  Seniors, many of whom live on fixed incomes, are struggling to find adequate affordable housing.  Greenville’s senior housing communities have lengthy waiting lists that are constantly growing.  To combat this issue, new income-restricted communities have opened, and several more are currently being built.  You can read more about the affordable senior housing climate in Greenville and what is being done to address it in the Greenville Journal.

COALITION MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Jordon Construction Company is a commercial construction business, but has also spent the past 23 years working to develop affordable housing in the Greenville community.  The minority-owned company is committed to making its visions a reality, bringing the futures they see into fruition.  When it comes to affordable housing development, the company began constructing single family housing for large families and have since begun to create larger multi-family projects as well.  President James Jordon and his team are eager to “work with the great talent in the Upstate to work on challenging issues to make our community better,” and they repeatedly tackle problems in the area with a can-do attitude and commitment to solving the issue.

Jordon also recognizes the impact that access to stable housing can have for a family.  “I believe that for families to be strong and children to have the best opportunity to be successful, it starts with quality housing and vibrant communities,” he says.  He also points to his own experiences, as his own mother would drive him and his sister across town so that they could attend the best schools.  Without affordable housing, he says, this opportunity isn’t available to many families, hindering their children’s exposure to the possibility of upward mobility.  Jordon wants to provide the greatest chance for families to thrive, and because of that, he is committed to producing stable and affordable housing that allows families to grow together.
