Calgary BRZs/BIAs have been working hard with the City to continue to provide benefits for our members. There’s good news for bars, restaurants and cafes. The City is extending support to businesses by continuing to allow patios on public land, prioritizing those applications, and waiving development permit, license of occupation and temporary permission fees for the upcoming season.
Not only does this support operators in generating more revenue, it also provides extra space needed for physical distancing through the pandemic and enlivens public spaces. The fee relief was first introduced last May and will continue into this year’s patio season, as the COVID-19 pandemic is ongoing and has created unprecedented economic challenges for Calgary businesses. This year’s program begins sooner to give owners ample time to prepare.
Business owners can apply now at calgary.ca/patios.
For those that received approval last year, there is an opportunity to follow a reduced process with quicker approvals if you reference last year’s information.
Email me and let me know you are applying for a patio and I’ll send you a letter of support for your application. There is an option this year to use your own barricades/fencing. Discuss what you propose with your
City representative during your pre-application.

Kensington Love was a huge success! Over the month of February in conjunction with Chinook Blast, the community welcomed a number of activation to its streets, including the launch of the Kensington Art Walk, the announcement of Kensington's monthly art grant program, fire pit activations in front of the Plaza Theatre and art pop-up's curated by PARK.
