The Assigner: Building an ML Component Start to Finish
We recently added a new component to our machine learning pipeline called the assigner. The role of this component is to link parts of an animal to their matching bodies. In the photograph above, that means connecting the frontmost wild dog to the correct tail. Our machine learning engineer Drew Blount wrote an excellent article explaining the details.

As part of our effort to create broader global platforms, Wildbook for Jaguar is now Whiskerbook. Our new Wildbook for feline friends contains all of the Jaguar data from the old platform, but also supports Asiatic Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus venaticus) and Snow Leopard (Panthera uncia).

Now on Flukebook: Curvrank v2
Curvrank, a matching algorithm focused on curves (or "edges"), was developed by Hendrick Weidelman in 2017. Last year Weidelman published a new version which includes a better segmentation algorithm, is more accurate in extracting contours, and runs much faster. This technology is now available on Flukebook for sperm whales, humpback whales, bottlenose dolphin, orca, fin whale, right whale, and more.
