SOLUTIONS FROM THE NEXT ECONOMY

Twelve women entrepreneurs building the Next Economy
The women entrepreneurs that are building the Next Economy
Here’s a statistic we’re pondering: women are the majority owners of only 15.6% of Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Canada. 15.6%. That’s it? It portrays a dire picture of gender inequality in our sector – but it’s one we can change.

At CSI, we offer programs to equip women entrepreneurs with the skills and resources they need to grow their ventures as part of the Women of Ontario Social Enterprise Network. We also have Social Entrepreneurship 101 — of which 75% percent of our graduates are women!

Of course, building an inclusive Next Economy doesn’t stop with our programs – it’s happening in the heart of our network where over 75 CSI member organizations are working to end gender inequality. We’re also proud to say 59% of CSI members are women – many of whom are the founders, CEOs, and leaders of their organizations.

We spoke to 12 of these brilliant women entrepreneurs, building the Next Economy by combatting the climate crisis, creating healthcare solutions, developing new technologies, and mentoring the next generation.

Bond to tackle diabetes in First Nations communities
Last year, we spoke to Jeff Cyr about the Community-Driven Outcomes Contract (CDOC), a social finance model that places control of solutions into the hands of its beneficiaries. A traditional social impact bond gives decision-making authority to external parties. Unfortunately, these parties may not fully understand the problems they’re trying to tackle; and therefore their solutions may not result in the impact they intended to have. The CDOC ensures that the beneficiaries have a say in what the solution is and how it gets implemented.

In February, Jeff and the Raven Capital team announced the diabetes bond. Rates of diabetes among Indigenous peoples are three to four times higher than in the Canadian population at large. This proposed bond will use the CDOC model to finance projects (like community kitchens and fitness programs) that have come out of an Indigenous solutions lab.

Lo—TEK: Design by Radical Indigenism
Julia Watson’s new book provides a blueprint for sustainable architecture in the 21st century. It is a first-ever compendium of overlooked design technologies from Indigenous groups around the world.
Fostering reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in Canada
Almost any organization can adapt the Circles of Reconciliation model: create a safe and respectful setting, present a theme to learn and understand different dimensions of Canada’s colonial history, then create space for each participant to share their life story as they see fit.
