Happy International Open Data Day and welcome to NYC Open Data Week 2021, friends!! 

Thank you for joining us in a year unlike any other. We are so excited to see you throughout the week. Here is the inside scoop for today's festivities:

 

TODAY'S EVENTS

12pm: Data Analysis Using Python: A Beginner’s Guide Featuring NYC Open Data — RSVP

1pm: NEW YORK ALIVE! — RSVP
💃🏞️ Join artist Jen Ray and data designer Jason Forrest as they present a not-entirely-serious exploration of the urges, needs, and desires of New York City residents. Outdoor event at 1pm and 5pm. Meet at Avenue B between 7th and 8th Streets by Tompkins Sq. Park. 

1pm: Opening Educational Resources for Law — RSVP 
⚖️📚 This workshop will start with a short presentation to introduce you to open educational resources (OER) for law and how they are transforming legal education and practice.

1:30pm: Shadow Tag — RSVP 
📊🖍 Join artist Cindy Stockton Moore in an interactive, participatory experience with tangible graphs and sidewalk chalk to explore local data. The project aims to reveal the unseen in the OpenCity data — data that impacts children specifically. This event is outdoor and child-friendly — please bring your kids!

4pm: NEW YORK ALIVE! — RSVP

Curator Spotlight:

Greta Byrum
Co-Director, Digital Equity Laboratory

Greta is the Co-Director of the New School’s Digital Equity Laboratory as well as the Community Tech NY (CTNY) project. She was crucial in building the equity component of NYC's groundbreaking 2020 Internet Master Plan as well as reporting on the privacy practices of NYC's internet services providers. We are thrilled to have Greta join us as a curator in the Digital Divide and Internet Health domain, where she has brilliantly lent her expertise to event organizers. Thank you for your help Greta!

As you plan your week, here are a few events you shouldn't miss:

  • ☕️ Meet and mingle with the Open Data Week community! Join us at virtual breakfasts each weekday morning. Grab your morning coffee, settle into a comfy seat and chat with special guests to start the day. And, in the evenings, gather with us in a virtual space to say hello and meet new people.
  • 🎓 New to NYC Open Data? Join us at Intro to NYC Open Data classes with Civic Innovation Fellows, who have been training at BetaNYC this semester to become NYC Open Data Ambassadors. 
  • 🖼 Data Through Design! Data Through Design’s 2021 exhibit is officially open! Visit the virtual gallery website to check out the art work and meet the artists behind the scenes.
  • 🦠 Learn about Covid19 data with NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. RSVP to hear about their challenges and opportunities to improve data communication and access.
