Study Abroad Opportunities

Fulbright scholarships fund students and alumni to travel abroad to work and learn, and UA students / alumni have been successful in winning Fulbright awards, with UA recognized again as a top producer of Fulbrights among US universities. This year UA had its most awards, with 17 successful applications this year. To celebrate this achievement and help you learn more about Fulbright opportunities that might fit your interests in the future, the Global Cafe will host a special virtual event on Tuesday (March 9) from 4-5pm where you can learn more about UA's past success and opportunities for the next round of Fulbright applications. You must preregister to attend at https://universityofalabama.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_0oGbLP9EAdb8hkq.

For a different opportunity, the International School for Jain Studies includes multiple programs to study Jainism and Prakrit (language of Jain texts) in India, including a highly subsidized two semester program starting in the Fall. The application deadline for the two semester program is May 1, 2021, and you can find more information on their website.

New Fall 2021 Course Connects Africa and Asia
A new course for UA this Fall, The Black Pacific, focuses on the Afro-Asian Diasporas, including people who migrated from Africa to various areas in Asia. This seminar will explore the often overlooked "routes of passage and exchange between the African continent and the peoples of Japan, China, India, the Pacific Islands and the Middle East."  UH 355 will be taught by Prof. Tara Mock (TTh 12:30-1:45). Don't miss an opportunity for an expanded view of the study of Asia and Africa.

Of course, UH 355 is not the only course in Asian Studies next semester. We will produce the course list soon, in time to register for Fall 2021. A variety of Asia related courses will be available in the Fall, including language courses at various levels, Humanities and Fine Arts Core Courses, Writing courses, and a range of upper level seminars. The full schedule will be posted at the Asian Studies website.
