Friends of Liberty Library Newsletter

March 7, 2021

It is hard to believe that it has been a year since the library closed and then open with restrictions. It has been a year like no other! But the future is looking hopeful. We will be able to open the windows again with warmer weather. I have an appointment for my first COVID-19 vaccination on Tuesday. Some of the library volunteers have already received theirs. Next month, we should be able to be open more hours. The library began using the new system just before we closed and volunteers will need to be retrained. So the hours will increase gradually, and we will continue to follow the guidance from the Maine CDC. Thanks for your patience and understanding.

Book Discussion

Wednesday, March 10, 6:30pm

We will be reading and discussing Mill Town: Reckoning with What Remains by Kerri Arsenault. Arsenault grew up in the rural working class town of Mexico, Maine. For over 100 years the community orbited around a paper mill that employs most townspeople, including three generations of Arsenault's own family. Years after she moved away, Arsenault realized the price she paid for that seemingly secure childhood. The mill, while providing livelihoods for nearly everyone, also contributed to the destruction of the environment and the decline of the town's economic, moral, and emotional health in a slow-moving catastrophe, earning the area the nickname "Cancer Valley." Anyone is welcome to attend even if you haven’t read the b

Register and the Zoom link will be sent to you on March 9th.

Summer Reading Program

This year’s Summer Reading theme is Tales and Tails. We are asking children to read to earn points to buy cat and dog food for the Waldo County Pet Food Pantry. The need is great this year as more people are seeking help from the pantry due to the pandemic. If you know a business or if you would like to support this program, please send a check and specify that it is for “Summer Reading.” Your donation will not only support literacy but also support pets in Waldo County!

Sherlock Holmes' famous memory trick really works

By Yasemin Saplakoglu

Sherlock Holmes remembers everything by imagining that he's storing bits of information in a "memory palace," a technique that originated in ancient Greece. Now, researchers have found that this method really does work to create long-lasting memories.

Users of the mnemonic technique, called the "method of loci," mentally navigate around a familiar place, such as a path (or Holmes' palace). To remember a piece of information, you "drop" it along the path and later retrace your steps and "pick it up." For example, if you're very familiar with Central Park in New York City, you can imagine walking through it, dropping the word "book" at the Boat House, then the word "water bottle" at the next bend, then the word "space" at the fountain. When you want to remember the words, you imagine retracing your exact steps.

By training with this method, the world's best memory champions can remember inordinate amounts of information, like word lists, digit series and decks of cards, according to the study. But the World Memory Championships test only short-term memory

Greenlights

I have been listening to the audiobook Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey, read by him. You might know McConaughey as an actor in numerous movies, including a Best Actor Award for the Dallas Buyers Club (2013), or his TV commercials for the Lincoln Motor Company. In his hometown of Austin, Texas, McConaughey has started a charitable foundation to help teenage kids, and Texas Monthly claimed that “Matthew McConaughey Did More for Texas Than Ted Cruz” during the recent snowstorms and power outages. Greenlights isn’t your typical celebrity autobiography; in fact, that’s the very first line in his book. This is a passage from the book that I enjoyed:

I never wrote things down to remember; I always wrote things down so I could forget. The idea of revisiting my life and musings was a daunting one; I wasn’t sure if I’d enjoy the company.
