Commander’s Log

Welcome to March! Who could have predicted at this time a year ago that we were about to go into lockdown to try to control a pandemic! Let’s keep our fingers crossed that the vaccine rollout goes as planned and that in a few months, we can start to see a return to a ‘normal’ life again!

I am happy to report that we took LaFortuna for a weekend sojourn at Plumper Cove and her engines just purred along. The weather was a little cooler than what I was expecting, especially after my husband informed me that he was trying to burn off the diesel for our heater and so we had to ration the heat. As I bustled around in our galley, clad in 3 layers of long underwear and still not completely warm, I glanced across the dock, where the lady of the neighbouring boat was preparing their breakfast clad only in a tank top! Heat issues aside, we are cautiously optimistic that we will be able to have a great boating season this year. We have already put more nautical miles on the boat for 2021 then we did for all of 2020!!

Looking back at past March issues of the Masthead, I see that this is normally when we start to gear up to provide RVCC checks. Unfortunately, this program has been sidelined again this year by COVID but that doesn’t mean that you can’t ensure that your vessel has all the safety equipment it needs. Fire extinguishers, flares, navigation lights should all be working. To do your own check before the start of the boating season, click here for minimum safety requirements for your size of vessel.

We have another interesting Squadron night coming up on March 15 with Ross & Elizabeth Bligh’s recalling of their trip to the Broughtons. This is being sponsored with the North Shore Squadron which we are collaborating with for Squadron nights.

Our AGM and Change of Watch are coming up soon. Though most Bridge members will be remaining in their positions, there are areas that we need your help. Any skill set can be advantageous, but especially if you have a knack or enjoyment of social media to promote our Squadron and its activities. Length of time as a member of VPSS is not an issue – just a desire to move the Squadron forward and have fun while doing it!

Our online combined Boating 2/3 is over the half-way mark at this point. We have an enthusiastic bunch of students with an enthusiastic bunch of tutors which equals learning fun. Because of the high demand for online boating courses, probably due to the unprecedented number of new boaters during the pandemic, we are going to run an online Boating 2 course starting April 13, 2021. This is a shorter course than the combined (6 weeks versus 12) but offers a lot of valuable information reviewing and building on the PCOC course. If you know anyone who has missed out on the earlier courses, encourage them to register ASAP here!

If you have not watched it, here is the link to “Abandoned Dreams” sponsored by Pacific Yachting on the abandoned boat situation in BC.

I look forward to ‘seeing’ everyone at our next Squadron meeting on March 15,

Elizabeth

March Virtual Squadron Night

To the Broughtons – and beyond! with Ross & Elizabeth Bligh

Monday, March 15, 2021
Presentation start: 7:30 PM
Log on start: 7:15 PM https://global.gotomeeting.com/join/165741117

Our March presentation will take us on a trip from here to the mid coast. We'll deal with getting through the three main passes heading north, transiting Johnstone Strait, how to get beyond Cape Caution, and all of the great places you can anchor or tie up in along the way. There will be lots of pictures and a few videos as well. The presentation will be of particular interest to anyone who has yet to make it to the Broughtons or has yet to get beyond Cape Caution -or who just likes taking a virtual trip up the coast!

Ross Bligh is a recently retired elementary school principal. He started sailing when his dad bought a Columbia 26 in 1974 - and he has not stopped since. Elizabeth Bligh recently retired having been the Principal Harpist of the Vancouver Symphony for 35 years. The first thing she did when they bought their boat was to take the Power Squadron course. Ross knew she was an excellent first mate when, cooking breakfast on the go on the second morning on the boat, she shouted from the galley, "There should be a buoy on your starboard side any moment now!" And, yes, there is a small harp on board!

Ross and Elizabeth sail 'Elision' (rhymes with 'collision' lol) a Beneteau 36.7 which they moor at the Spruce Harbour Floating Home Co-op in False Creek. They are members of the Deep Cove Yacht Club.

Upcoming Squadron Nights

Transport Canada Office of Boating Safety

Monday, April 19, 2021
Presentation start: 7:30 PM
Log on start: 7:15 PM

We welcome Kim Edison, Boating Safety Officer, at the Transport Canada Office of Boating Safety, and associate Robyn to be our guest speakers. The Office of Boating Safety is responsible for overseeing regulations, standards and policies, enforcement and technical services for recreational vessels. It encourages safe boating practices and compliance with regulations.

Edison and Robyn will present information about the Office of Boating Safety and how Transport Canada serves the boating community and in addition will provide information about the upcoming PCL/PCOC changes. Upon conclusion of the presentation there will be a Q&A session. If you already have a question for Transport Canada about boating regulations, please forward it to me at programs@vpsboat.org and Edison will include it in his presentation.

Our guest speakers are well qualified to give us an up to the minute talk on all the rules we need to update ourselves on before the coming boating season.

Edison Kim has been working for the Office of Boating Safety at Transport Canada for the past year. He has spent time sailing the coastal waters of British Columbia while serving as a Naval Warfare Officer with the Royal Canadian Navy.

Robyn has been working for the Office of Boating Safety for 5 months now. She has lived on her sailboat in Vancouver for the past 6 years and is excited to get back on the water this season!

Transport Canada has a lot of responsibilities and covers quite a few areas of interest. For further information, please review their website.
Do you have any Stories?

...that you'd like to share?

If you feel the urge to put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard, as the case may be), and have a story you'd like to share with fellow members, we'd like to read it!

Funny stories, lesson-learned stories, great cruising stories, you-won't-believe-what-happened stories...

Please send any short masterpieces to pro@vpsboat.org and we'll try to include them in the Masthead when we have space.

Happy writing... and boating!
