News
Live Well Wakefield wins Award
Live Well Wakefield won the Award for the Best Larger Social Prescribing Project at the 2021 Social Prescribing Network Awards! The awards ceremony took place on 4 March 2021.
Live Well Wakefield offers social prescribing services right across the Wakefield District and over the past 12 months has adapted their delivery to ensure the support remains available during the Covid-19 pandemic. In that time they have supported over 3,000 people to access services to improve their health and wellbeing and ensured vulnerable people have access to essentials like food and medication.
Congratulations to the Live Well team! It's fantastic to work with you.
COVID-19 play for South Asian communities
ChaiCup Productions has created a play to raise awareness about COVID-19 and the vaccine in South Asian BAME communities. It has been sponsored by South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.
The play will be webcast on 20 March followed by a Q&A session - the event is free for anyone to attend. For more information, please see the flyer (pdf).
Hay Your Say on Plans to Transform Travel
Wakefield Council and West Yorkshire Combined Authority are inviting Wakefield-based organisations to have a say on plans to transform travel in Wakefield city centre.
The £13.6m project aims to increase footfall to benefit the tourism, retail and hospitality sectors, increase employment prospects, alleviate congestion, improve air quality and reliability of bus journeys, provide a new cycle lane to link the railway stations to key amenities, employment and education hubs and enhance streetscapes among other things. The areas proposed for change are:
- A61 South of Kirkgate Gyratory
- Lower Warrengate to Kirkgate Station
- Northgate, Marsh Way and Access to Bus Station
- Peterson Road and Stanley Road
- Westgate Station, Mulberry Way and Wood Street (North)
- Wood Street (South), Bull Ring and Northgate to The Springs

WYCAS Finance Forum - Gift Aid
Date: 21 April 2021
WYCAS is hosting a virtual Finance Forum, and all Wakefield District based charities are welcome. The main topic will be Gift Aid, and there will be a presentation from the specialist team at HMRC, as well as an opportunity to ask any questions and share your experiences of using Gift Aid.
Topics include:
- Gift Aid Overview
- Gift Aid Small Donations Scheme (GASDS)
- How to apply for recognition as a charity for tax purposes
- Making a repayment claim
This forum will take place online via Microsoft Teams, please ensure you have access to Microsoft Teams before booking. Log in information will be emailed to participants a few days prior to the event. Places are limited to 10.

Covid-19 Vaccine Hesitancy Training
This free training delivered by Yorkshire MESMAC has been commissioned by Public Health at Wakefield Council and is accessible by partners outside Wakefield district also.
This training is for all front-line staff in in the VCSE who might have a conversation with a vaccine hesitant client, or who might want to learn how to promote Covid-19 vaccination within an atmosphere of acceptance and compassion. In this training we will cover the following learning outcomes:
- To understand the stages of change as related to health behaviours and how they might impact on people’s decision to take up the Covid-19 vaccine
- To understand what Motivational Interviewing is, to understand it’s role in responding to vaccine hesitancy, and how to adopt an MI approach in your brief intervention
- To understand how to tailor a brief intervention to the needs, beliefs, and aspirations of different types vaccine hesitant client.
This training is free and it will be ran on a weekly basis until the end of April.

COVID-19 Roadmap Resources
Public Health England has published a series of resources to be used to communicate the Government's Roadmap out of COVID-19 restrictions. The resources can be viewed and downloaded from the Public Health England website.
Census 2021 - How to Help Your Community Take Part
The Census is a survey that happens every 10 years and gives us a picture of all the people and households in England and Wales. The next Census takes place on Sunday 21 March 2021. Every household should complete the Census on Sunday 21 March 2021 or as soon as possible after.
David Young is the Census Engagement Manager for Wakefield, working for the Office for National Statistics, to help deliver the March 2021 Census. In order to support and enhance participation, David has provided the following guide: How to help the public take part in Census 2021 (pdf).
As well as the guide, the website contains Census 2021 promotional materials and resources: Census 2021 Downloadable Resources. The resources are designed to help local authorities, community groups and higher education organisations spread the word about the Census and support people to complete it.

Unpaid Carers Free Training
The West Yorkshire and Harrogate Health and Care Partnership alongside expert trainer Community Practitioner Alliance are delivering a FREE training programme to support our unpaid carers and people with a PHB now and beyond COVID-19. The training is open to participants within the West Yorkshire and Harrogate region only.
The training session is led by an experienced clinical tutor via a digital platform. A guide to accessing the digital platform will be given to participating carers (privacy settings available e.g. turn camera off). Training lasts 45 minutes and offers support with:
- Keeping the care space safe
- Managing Linen
- Disposing of personnel waste
- Basic hygiene for visitors
- Handwashing
- Basic Personal Protection Equipment gloves, aprons and masks
- Carer Mental Wellbeing

Funding
Lloyds Bank Foundation

Small and local charities with a yearly income of £25,000 to £1 million who are helping people experiencing complex social issues can now apply for a two-year unrestricted grant of £50,000.
Alongside unrestricted funding, successful charities will be supported by one of the Foundation’s regional managers, who will work with them to access a wide range of organisational development support to help meet identified needs.
On Tuesday 30 March at 2pm, Lloyds will be holding a live Q&A panel with their grants team to talk through the eligibility criteria for their funding, the details of the grants and more. To register to attend the online session, please sign up via Eventbrite.
Building Powerful Communities Small Capital Grants Programme
Building Powerful Communities is an exciting project that will:
- Inspire and develop community entrepreneurs
- Provide small capital grants to get organisations started
- Provide tailored development and business support
The Building Powerful Communities Project is open to people and community businesses that are based in Airedale, Castleford, Ferrybridge, Havercroft & Ryhill, Kinsley & Fitzwilliam, South Elmsall and South Kirkby with an eligible postcode.
Small Capital Grants are to enable the purchase of equipment to help businesses get started or be more enterprising. Grants between £1,000 and £10,000 are available for new and existing small businesses, sole traders, social enterprises and voluntary/charitable organisations who are setting up or want to develop their business or organisation. Requests over £10,000 may be considered by the Panel and should be initially discussed with the Nova Adviser before submitting an application.
The grant will cover 60% of the cost of the equipment, 40% match funding will need to be provided by the applicant. Match can be provided through other charitable grant givers, social investment, and an organisations own funding (excluding other ESIF funds). Help and advice can be provided by a Nova Adviser.
Building Powerful Communities is part of Wakefield’s PEAT Project which is a CLLD Programme that is part financed by the European Structural and Investment Fund, and will run until December 2021. It is designed to develop Third Sector Capacity, building on local community assets and resources through programmes of activity to support the third sector to become more enterprising and sustainable.

Women Thrive Fund
Deadline: 25 March 2021
Rosa and Smallwood Trust have launched the 'Women Thrive Fund' for women’s and girls’ organisations in the UK. With £1.79 million of Tampon Tax money, this partnership fund will give grants of up to £40,000 to organisations supporting women and girls to improve their mental health and wellbeing and/or improve their financial resilience. The Women Thrive Fund is giving grants of up to:
- £15,000 for organisations with a turnover of £200,000 inclusive
- £40,000 for organisations with a turnover of £200,001 – £999,999.
Organisations can also apply for an additional 25% of their grant request for work which will strengthen their organisation. The programme will fund work supporting the UK’s most vulnerable, disadvantaged and/or under-represented women and girls to:
- Improve their mental health and well-being, gaining confidence, tools, skills and support to sustain those improvements; and/or
- Improve their financial resilience, increasing their routes out of poverty, gaining confidence, tools, skills and support to secure a stable financial future.
UK Youth Parliament Programme
Deadline: 26 March 2021 at 12pm
The objective of the UK Youth Parliament is to support young people across the UK to participate in the democratic process, enabling them to express their voices and be heard on issues that matter to them.
This grant competition is inviting charitable, benevolent and philanthropic organisations in England to apply for funding. The criteria are:
- applications should be for up to £233,300
- the value of the grant requested must not represent more than 50% of the applicant organisation’s, or consortia’s collective annual income for the financial year
- applicants should be able to demonstrate that they can carry out activity across multiple regions in England, and also in the devolved nations
- applicants should be able to demonstrate that delivery can continue under a range of Covid-19 restrictions
- applicants must be able to draw down and complete all funded activity by 31st March 2022
- applicants should demonstrate that they will be able to secure external investment and partnerships to supplement this grant
- applications must include details of arrangements for safeguarding children and vulnerable adults as part of their planned activities.
Magic Little Grants
Deadline: 31 October 2021
Local Giving has partnered with 6 funding trusts from the People's Postcode Lottery to provide grants of £500 for small charities and community groups. In previous years, funding had to go towards projects that were delivering sports or physical activities. But this year funding can go towards any of the below projects:
- Improving mental wellbeing
- Enabling community participation in the arts
- Preventing or reducing the impact of poverty
- Supporting marginalised groups and promoting equality
- Improving biodiversity and green spaces
- Enabling participation in physical activity
- Responding to the climate emergency and promoting sustainability
- Increasing community access to outdoor space
