What We've Been Up To

As we come upon March 19th, Global Day of Action, Fridays for Future Calgary has been hard at work on planning safe actions we can take this year to fight the climate crisis, and dismantle the systems of oppression that have caused it. We’ve been collaborating with the Climate Strike Canada network to plan an amazing online action for the 19th, along with a few things of our own. We’ve also been reflecting a lot on how we can better take care of ourselves and each other, to prevent burnout.

Weekly Strikes Are Cancelled Until Further Notice

Due to the continuous rise in COVID-19 cases in Calgary, and the new restrictions put in place by the government, we will not be holding any in-person strikes until further notice. We will continue to keep our presence online strong, and we invite you to keep striking digitally with us! Stay tuned!

March 19th Act on your Promises: National Online Climate Strike

On Friday, March 19th, Climate Strike Canada will be hosting a live stream with presentations and speeches from youth-led grassroots climate groups and frontline activists, to discuss intersectional climate justice, and a just transition away from fossil fuels, across Turtle Island. It will run from 3-7 pm MST. Click here to register for the lives stream. Alternatively, you may watch the live stream on one of Climate Strike Canada's social media platforms.

Every Canadian has a right to a safe, clean, and healthy environment. Climate change is a threat to this right, one which the government has failed to meaningfully acknowledge or act upon. Bill-C232 recognizes this danger, designates the climate crisis as a national emergency. To protect your right to a healthy and safe environment, sign this petition to voice your support for immediate climate action!
Bigotry is alive and well in Alberta and this week’s “freedom” rally in Edmonton is concrete evidence of this. There was a counter-protest held that we supported to stand against hatred and send a message to Jason Kenney that the sanction of events such as these will not be tolerated by the people of Alberta.

Solidarity with Braided Warriors and all Land Defenders! We must dismantle this colonial system that encourages violence against the earth and those defending it. The Braided Warriors are a collective of Indigenous youth opposing resource extraction projects and fighting for sovereignty in so-called "Vancouver". Learn more on our post.

Find out how climate change is affecting our world and what's being done about it.

Ten myths about net-zero targets and carbon offsetting, busted: In response to the recent upsurge in demands for action against climate change, many companies and governments have begun making promises about reaching net-zero carbon emissions or achieving carbon neutrality. But “carbon neutrality targets are often not as ambitious as they sound, relying on problematic carbon offsets and unproven technologies.”

In 2020, we saw record lows in carbon emission when COVID-19 forced the world to a halt. Rivers cleared, wildlife returned, all as a result of the biggest worldwide drop in carbon emissions ever recorded. The fight against the global pandemic is far from over, however, the greenhouse emissions drop is almost gone.

Sign the Petition to Support Bill C-232

If you haven’t already done so, here’s a reminder to sign the petition supporting Bill C-232. This bill is the Climate Emergency Action Act that will serve to hold the Canadian government accountable to: meet greenhouse gas emission targets set for 2030, ensure a safe and just transition for citizens towards a green economy, and do so while upholding the rights of Indigenous peoples. This bill is supposed to be voted on in the early spring, so make your voice heard NOW.

Support Mutual Aid Initiatives

Every action helps. Mutual Aid initiatives are about solidarity, not charity, and focus on relationships between individuals and the sharing of resources and assistance when needed. Here is a list of some Calgary-based mutual aid projects to support. You can find links to donate and learn more about them in our linktree.
