Belltower Restoration Complete
The Memorial Belltower Restoration project was recently accepted by the State Construction Office on February 22. The Memorial Belltower is the best known and most beloved symbol of NC State University. Built to honor 34 alumni killed in World War I, with its cornerstone laid in 1921, the Belltower celebrates its 100th anniversary this year with a restored exterior, renovated shrine room, new HVAC system and a full complement of 55 bells and carillon.

It's mulching season for NC State Grounds Services. February through May, the Grounds Services staff will install mulch throughout campus landscaping areas. In addition to traditional triple-shredded hardwood mulch that's purchased, Grounds utilizes campus-made mulch that's made of tree debris, compost and leaves. For example, the Grounds Services Tree Crew provided more than 600 yards of wood chips that were salvaged from storm debris and scheduled tree removals in 2020. Use of campus-made mulch wherever possible embodies financial and environmental stewardship. Pictured are Carlos Mejia and Rob Baird providing mulching services for Housing.

Making Campus More Accessible
The Office of the University Architect (OUA) has partnered with Capital Project Management (CPM) and Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity (OIED) to begin implementing projects that address accessibility deficiencies identified by the ADA Transition Plan. OUA maintains the physical barrier component of the plan. OUA and OIED evaluate priorities, and CPM initiates and manages the projects. Representatives from OUA also serve on the campus ADA Stakeholder Committee, led by the ADA Coordinator's Office within OIED. Projects identified by the ADA Transition Plan are currently underway in Kamphoefner Hall, Nelson Hall, Talley and the CHASS Triplex (Winston, Caldwell, Tompkins). Recently, the Lock Shop installed touchless door operators at restrooms on the second floor of Talley, addressing accessibility and Covid-19 prevention. This was funded by Student Government accessibility funds and involved collaboration between Facilities, Student Government and Campus Enterprises.
