The Weekly Message of
St. Mary Catholic School

Celebrating 145 Years in Forming Disciples of Christ

March 11, 2021
Third Week of Lent

Principal's Message

Dear School Family,

Good afternoon!

Remember to go and see your kids’ beautiful art work at the Hagerstown City Park Museum.  The Grades 3-5 exhibit runs through tomorrow, and then it’s middle school all next week.  See the flyer HERE.

The extra attention I’ve given to our annual Art Show is meant as a reminder that Beauty and the joy of children are stronger than Covid, and the fact that the St. Mary’s Art Show tradition has continued, even with its limitations, is a ray of light and hope.  Getting back to normal seems closer and closer.  Let’s all pray that the community life of St. Mary’s School and Church will shine forth and blossom once again with all the joy and love it is known for.

God bless America and God bless our School and Parish Family!
Mr. Nicely
Early Dismissal Reminder

Friday, March 19th  will be an EARLY DISMISSAL day for students at St. Mary’s.  This will be in honor of St. Joseph on his big Feast Day.  Our celebration is even bigger this year because we are in the Year Of St. Joseph which Pope Francis began on December 8th

We will have live streamed school Mass at 10:30am.  Since this is a Catholic Church Solemnity, and not a day of penance for Lent, we will offer special treats to the whole school family.  Our students at home will have treats available for pick-up in the front office that morning, before or after Mass.

Here is the link to the St. Mary Facebook page for the live streamed mass.  You can also find it through the parish website.

Calendar Change
Our Faculty Retreat date will change from April 26th to April 23rd.   School will be closed to students on Friday, April 23rd.  We hope this change will not cause any issues for our families.

Our Pastor, Father Cibelli, will be our “Retreat Master," leading us through prayer and spiritual conferences in a full day of spiritual renewal during the upcoming Easter Season.

Thank you for making this change in your calendars.

Tuition Credit Opportunity

It bears repeating, that the most powerful marketing strategy of any Catholic school is “WORD of MOUTH” advertising by school families.  And to top it off, it’s free!  And even better, SMCS families can get a tuition credit for every family they refer successfully to enroll at SMCS.  Yes, even THREE families!  So take the “Three Family Challenge” and go spread the word about St. Mary Catholic School!

Click HERE for details about this program.

Feature Teacher

Each week we spotlight one of our magnificent St. Mary Catholic School teachers.  Today we are happy to introduce another great person behind those delicious St. Mary’s lunches, our Kitchen Assistant and Resident Sous Chef, Mrs. Barbara Brooks.

By now, you know that EVERY staff member at SMCS is a teacher.  The daily lesson Mrs. Brooks teaches us is cheerful diligence and hospitality.  Working side by side with Chef Shultz, she is always ready with a smile and never hesitates to share secret ingredients.

Once again, we have an example of the welcoming hospitality Archbishop Lori talks about in his new Pastoral Letter “A Light Brightly Visible”.

Thank you, Mrs. Brooks!

"Every Cup Counts!"
Catholic Culture Column
Did you know?

The Catholic Church uses ROSE colored Vestments at Holy Mass this coming weekend.  Why?

Because that color is half-way between Violet, the color for penance, and White, the color for glory.  In other words, Holy Mother Church, always a caring mother, allows a brief “reprieve” half-way into the penance of Lent, which is why the fourth Sunday of Lent is always called “Laetare Sunday”, which is Latin for “Rejoice Sunday”.  This is similar to Gaudete Sunday during Advent, but Laetare points to a more interior joy than Gaudete.

Read more HERE.

There’s an abundance of resources for families out there.  Our own archdiocese has a big selection to choose from.  Click HERE https://www.archbalt.org/lent/ to see.

A great way to learn about saints and much more about the Catholic Faith and Catholic Culture is to visit the Catholic Culture website:
https://www.catholicculture.org/commentary/for-all-saints/

Reading stories about saints is a great way for kids and grown-ups to see what virtue looks like.  Many stories of saints point to struggles they had that we can all relate.

St. Mary Catholic School Prayer to our Patroness

We fly to thy patronage, O holy Mother of God; despise not our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us from all dangers, O glorious and blessed Virgin.  Amen.

Maryland Catholic Conference

Dear Principals and Presidents,

Yesterday was our annual Catholic Advocacy Day, when we asked Catholics statewide to reach out to our state lawmakers on a few important issues up for legislative consideration during the ongoing legislative session. The BOOST Scholarship Program was one of those priority items.

We urge you to send the advocacy link below to parents, school board members, or any other supporters so that their voices may be heard directly by their state senators and delegates in just a few clicks.

www.mdcatholic.org/2021-boost

Whether you have a significant number of BOOST Scholarship recipients at your school, just a small number impacted by the program, or none at all, BOOST impacts all of our Catholic schools. The assistance provided by BOOST is a sizable part of the landscape of tuition assistance that enables students to attend our Catholic schools.  Very simply put, losing BOOST would have an impact on all students, especially in this particular year.

We kindly ask you all to play a part in reaching out to our state legislators in support of BOOST, as it is THE way to show them we need it and we're paying attention to what they do in Annapolis.

Lastly, download this toolkit (Word file) you can use for email and social media promotion for BOOST in the coming weeks, as our lawmakers consider the program.

Thanks for your support!

SPRING BREAK -

All out of state or international travel moving forward are as follows until suspended by the Governor of MD. If families or staff  traveled out of State, to other than the exempt States (PA, DE, VA, WV, or DC),  those individuals need to ensure that they either complete a full 10 day quarantine prior to returning to in-person school or make arrangements ahead of time for the required tests 3-5 days upon return to Maryland or to their home state, if they reside outside of Maryland but attend or work in a school in Maryland.   Please continue to inform the school with regard to Spring break family travel, transparency, any exposures, for the health and safety of our valued families and staff.  There is no longer a threshold to consider such as a positivity rate of 10%. This travel order applies to all travel with the exempted states noted above.
The period of quarantine is now reduced from 14 to 10 days, with continuous symptom monitoring, although 14 days is the gold standard.

Requirement for Proof of Negative COVID-19 Test or Recovery from COVID-19 for All Air Passengers Arriving in the United States After International/Caribbean travel - See guidelines HERE.

ALTHOUGH THE ABOVE STATES ARE EXEMPT, TRANSMISSION RISKS ARE EQUALLY AS LIKELY IN THOSE STATES.

PLEASE KEEP IN MIND: The CDC continues to recommend avoiding all non-essential travel!!! The health concerns of the pandemic are not over and introduction of new, more easily transmissible variants have further exacerbated the risk of contracting or spreading this virus. PLEASE take into consideration when determining your plans for Spring Break, travel in general, and gathering in groups for ALL those that may be affected.

Sports outside of school-  Families and students participating in travel sports, tournaments, are equally vulnerable to increased transmission of Covid. We appreciate everyone's transparency.

CLOSE CONTACT EXPOSURE TO POTENTIAL POSITIVE-
·With respect to the AOB policy, it is noted in the policy that the testing requirements are as follows:
It is recommended to test about 3 days after exposure. You must quarantine/isolate awaiting your test results. Covid cases throughout a household extends quarantine time as each person tests positive and/or has symptoms. You are required to call the Washington County Health Dept for any positive case to initiate contact tracing requirements along with notifying the school ASAP.  SMCS may also be required to complete contact tracing within the school. You will be required to quarantine for 10 days with continued symptom monitoring through 14 days. Please forward your student test results to pradley@stmarycatholicschool.org upon receiving them. The student may return after being symptom/fever/medication free for a full 24 hours.
-At home Covid-19 tests or rapid tests are not accepted for any purposes.
