Celebrating Women

On Monday 8 March the world celebrated female power and womanhood. Women dominate the workforce here at PRSC and Stokes Croft China - head on over to our Instagram to hear china decorator Maryem's IWD story, or check out our range of feminist china and literature, available to order online.

Meanwhile, the Bristol Post compiled a list of Bristol's 87 most influential women in 2021, Upfest announced the completion of a series of murals in Bedminster that will become the largest street art project in the UK designed and painted by female street artists, and Bristol City Council voted to take their proposed strip club ban to public consultation. The controversial ban would put hundreds of (mostly female) jobs at risk, and has already sparked discussion around legality vs morality, and violence against women.

Community News

Breaking News from Adblock!

Following campaigning and a petition which reached 1001 signatories, Bristol City Council have created a policy which limits advertising for harmful products on council owned and controlled sites. This means all billboards on council land or owned by BCC, including all bus stops and all advertising in parks, will no longer be allowed to advertise junk food, alcohol, or gambling. The petition also asked for BCC to ban advertising of high carbon products which have a big impact on our carbon footprints. This was not included in the policy, but they've said they'll look into the possibility of introducing it at a later date.

A previous Adblock Bristol petition to the council asking for advertising in parks to be banned was dismissed in the grounds that parks needed funding, so this policy is definitely a step in the right direction.

The Carriageworks Action Group have submitted an objection to the recent planning application to build 28 1-2 bedroom flats in place of the previously proposed eight 3-4 bedroom houses. Good news!

At a time when the world seems gloomy and icebergs are still melting, here's nine positive environmental news stories from 'One Tree Planted' to lift your sustainable spirit.

While we're on the subject of good things, the economic benefits of conserving or restoring natural sites now “outweigh” the profit potential of using the same areas for farming or timber, according to Positive News UK.

Our Air, Our City would also like to invite you to their fourth online forum on Saturday 27 March, 11am-1pm, to make a clear stand about the necessity of Clean Air for All. Please email ourairourcity@protonmail.com if you would like to join the forum.

Off the Wall

More favourites from our Outdoor Gallery archive update. Lots of prints available from our shop, with new ones coming soon!

Wall #101 // March 2017 // Matchbox Gallery crew (DNT & Mr Sleven) for International Women's day
Wall #115 // August 2018 // The result of a five week course we ran with young people from the Creative Youth Network
Wall #117 // October 2018 // Painted by PRSC for Friends of the Earth Bristol

It's worth noting that whilst FOE are less active these days, there are lots of other groups who have taken up this challenge more recently, notably the Our Air, Our City super-group, where lots of organisations are campaigning together. Still no action, although the council have announced exactly how and where the Low Emission Zone will be imposed, with little mitigation for those on low incomes.
