The Black Type Digest
Sire nicks special

Welcome to this sire nicks special edition of the Black Type Digest.

The downloadable pdf looks at the 20 leading sires standing in Europe based on last year’s leading sires’ table and show the five most effective broodmare sire crosses for each sire, judged by the average official rating for each cross.

Most published analyses of sire nicks use the percentage of stakes winners for each cross as the determining factor. Using the average official rating for each cross instead gives a larger sample size that allows more robust conclusions to be drawn.

The sire – broodmare sire crosses displayed are those with at least five different broodmares providing runners for each cross, meaning each cross listed has some degree of consistency. For most of these sires there will be crosses with a higher average rating, but there may as few as one highly-rated runner on those crosses. By restricting the analysis, we hope to reveal the crosses that set a useful precedent that is capable of being replicated in future.

Set against that, these crosses reflect what has already been tried by breeders. There may well be better nicks that exist for each sire, and there may be successful nicks that are emerging that are not included here. For the full picture, head to the-racehorse.com where you can purchase a comprehensive nick report for any sire showing all broodmare cross results to date. You can also purchase the report for your mare’s broodmare sire, showing which sire crosses are proving effective.

Three broodmare sires stand out in this analysis, appearing among the top five crosses for six different stallions.

The first of these is Dansili, whose mares have produced the like of St Leger winner Galileo Chrome (Australia), G2 Champions Juvenile Stakes winner Cadillac (Lope De Vega), Sprint Cup winner Dream Of Dreams (Dream Ahead) and three-time French Group winner Tropbeau (Showcasing). Also of note are the emerging crosses (with insufficient runners for this analysis) between Dansili mares and both Golden Horn (rated as a young sire to follow in our sire lists special published last month) and recent Coolmore recruit Wootton Bassett.

The second sire to appear six times is the late Anabaa, whose influence as a broodmare sire is diminishing, with only 23 two year old runners last season. Unsurprisingly, he features as a leading cross for French stallions Le Havre, Kendargent and Rajsaman, but also is amongst the five leading crosses for both Galileo and Dubawi.

The third of our elite group is Montjeu, another broodmare sire whose influence is beginning to wane, with his final crop now being eight year olds. His mares have also crossed well with French sires on our list – Siyouni, Kendargent and Rajsaman. His mares have produced Oaks winner Anapurna (Frankel) and Dewhurst winner Parish Hall (Teofilo) out of sons of Galileo, with these Group One winners being inbred 3x3 to Sadler’s Wells.

Pivotal has been feted as a broodmare sire in recent years with his mares’ offspring by Galileo particularly to the fore, and he appears five times on the table in respect of his crosses with Galileo, Frankel, Australia, Dream Ahead and Showcasing.

Danehill Dancer appears four times on the table in respect of his crosses with Galileo, Kingman, Wootton Bassett and Australia.

We hope you find the sirenicks report useful and it helps you in clarifying your thoughts on stallion selection for 2021. The Black Type Digest will return on Tuesday 30 March with a roundup of stakes races in the first quarter of the year and will be weekly thereafter. See you then.

With kind regards
