April News

Kia Ora Koutou,

Wow can you believe April is here already? This month is a bit patchy on the educational calendar with the Easter and School Holidays breaks falling separately this year. Regardless, we hope you are able to enjoy a decent break with friends and family.
Our webinar series is gaining traction, with two more available on our website, and more in the pipeline. Check out the details below.

Also below is some legislation changes as a result of the Abortion Law reform, and what these changes might mean for school nurses.

Both Youth Week and International Nurses Day are coming up in May. Are you planning anything special for these dates? We would love to know :D

Legislation Update

We had the privilege of chatting recently with a representative from the Ministry of Health about the Abortion Law Reform. The Abortion Legislation Act (2020) has seen a shift from this sitting within the Ministry of Justice under the crimes act (1961), to the Ministry of Health under the updated Contraception, Sterilization and Abortion act of 1977 which better aligns the regulation of abortion services with other health services. There are some key changes that may affect students in schools...

•The new act allows for a wider range of registered health professionals who may provide abortions (subject to scope of practices and training)
•The role of certifying consultants has been removed
•If you are a conscientious objector to abortion, there are changes for what this means to your practice. You can still choose to opt out of a consultation with a patient considering an abortion, but you MUST past them onto another health professional to ensure they can access the health service they need/want.
•There is no statutory test for abortions before twenty weeks
•There are new criteria for abortions from 20 weeks of pregnancy
•Abortions no longer have to take place in licensed facilities
•Counselling services must be available but not mandatory
•Patients can self refer to abortion services. This is worth bearing in mind for both School Nurses and Guidance Counsellors as this is a significant change.

More information for health professionals on the work of the MOH about the changes can be found here

A related ROI (Registration of Interest) is currently out on GETS (Government Electronic Tender System) and is welcoming applications for the following:
  • service design (co-design of a new service with rangatahi Māori)
  • service innovation (to improve access to an existing service) and
  • abortion workforce training (inclusive of workforce supporting access to abortion).
More information on the ROI can be directly found on the GETS Website
