editor's note

Dear <<First Name>>,

cw: racism, racial trauma

On Wednesday, I sent out a letter apologizing to our BIPOC and specifically Black readers for the hurt that last week’s newsletter caused. In last week’s note, I wrote about the emotional turmoil of the past year, but I failed to mention racial injustice and the trauma of this past year for Black communities in particular. I want to reiterate that I’m sorry, take responsibility, and acknowledge that hurt.

The GNI team and I are committed to improving representation and inclusion in the content we share, the community programming we produce, and the space we cultivate on The Lounge. You can expect to see a full Equity & Anti-Racism Accountability Report on our website in April, and every six months after, as we transparently work towards our goal of better representation. You can also read more details about what’s to come in my note from earlier this week.

I founded Girls’ Night In as a newsletter that helps you unwind, recharge, and take care of yourself and one another. It’s a space for joy, connection, and care. We’re looking forward to continuing to create this space with you while working to ensure that our work is more representative, amplifying, and welcoming to readers of color and especially Black readers moving forward.

Should you have any feedback or ideas, I invite you to share through this feedback form. The team and I are reading every response and we’re committed to doing better.

Until next Friday,
Alisha Ramos, CEO and Founder at GNI

weekly picks

ideas for unwinding this weekend...
a slow project for your weekend (via @erdbeertorten)
  1. Some screen-free cooking projects... 🌸 Because sometimes the best way to keep your hands off your phone is to cover them in flour, we present: ravioli flowers (above), chocolate matcha sticky buns, and olive oil cake — each a weekend treat in their own special way. 😋

  2. A comforting book we're thankful for... 📚 My Inner Sky by Mari Andrew is full of gentle and thoughtful essays on coping with what so many of us are feeling right now: grief, illness, heartbreak and more. It's an uplifting, feels-like-a-hug look at the small, quotidian things that keep us going, even through tough times.
  3. A design tool you'll actually want to use... 😍 You know what feels great? When you can make a portfolio tweak, social media post, or presentation look exactly the way you want, even if you don't have a background in design. Projector is a collaborative graphic design platform that gives you access to template libraries, approachable editing tools, and options for visual storytelling. And it's free — play with it here. #SPONSORSTHING

  4. An expanded way to think about meditation... 💆‍♀️ Here's your weekly reminder that there are many types of meditation — meaning if one hasn't helped you find calm in the past, another might work for you in the future. As spring draws near, we're drawn to walking meditation. What about you?

  5. A more affordable option for doing your taxes... 💡 Tax season is stressful. This year, it's likely to be especially so. We're not experts, but we do know that there's a lot of gatekeeping of tax resources and information that typically happens around this time of year. Members of our team have found this resource more affordable than the big-name more expensive options.

team try-it

where we test partner products and report back
"I'm a curious tester turned true believer of the Equilibria full spectrum CBD soft gels. When I take one before going to bed, I get some of the best sleep I've gotten in a while. I've tried a bunch of CBD products, including tinctures from other brands, but there's something about this one that does work for me. I feel well-rested and like knowing everything in it is traceable from farm partners to final product. Next up: I'll be seeking more guidance from one of their dosage specialists." - Alisha, GNI Founder/CEO

Start your CBD journey with Equilibria. GNI readers can get 20% off your first order here. (Tip: We like the Balance and Briliance Boxes if you're looking for a place to start.)

Also reading the CDC's updated guidelines for those who have been vaccinated, though it's important to understand the barriers to vaccination that still exist in so many communities.

📱 Watching...

This clip of eight-year-old actor Alan Kim accepting a Critic's Choice Award for his role in Minari is not only adorable, it's important. Award shows so often under-recognize the contributions of BIPOC and other marginalized communities, but his performance and his speech underlines the continued impact of sharing these stories.

We've got... a music video rec! Yes, in 2021. This week we're watching Leave the Door Open by Bruno Mars, Anderson .Paak, and Silk Sonic for all the old-school love song vibes. Highly recommend just having this song on repeat in the mornings as you ease into your day as well.

🎧 Listening to...

Last week's Call Your Girlfriend episode on burnout gets really specific on how you might recognize it in your own personal and professional life. It also begins an important discussion on differentiating burnout from depression, which feels particularly important right now.

IKEA recently announced the end of an era as it retires its beloved print catalog — but before they go, there's some good news... you can listen to the final catalog via an auditory experience that spans over three hours and prioritizes storytelling in a whole new way.
