Hello! Thank you for subscribing to receive regular prayer updates on our plans to grow a church for Eyres Monsell.

As this is the first one, we wanted to explain a little about what we’re doing and why.

What is Eyres Monsell?

Eyres Monsell is a council estate of around 12,000 people in the South of Leicester. It’s predominantly white, and a mixture of private and social housing. It’s in the top 10% of deprived estates in the UK, with high levels of poverty, crime, drug and alcohol addiction and increasing prostitution. There are 2 primary schools on the estate, along with 3 pubs, a few bookies, takeaways and co-ops - but no active gospel outreach in the estate itself.

Why are we involved?

I taught at one of the primary schools for 7 years after moving to the area, and over those years our heart for the estate and our desire to see a healthy bible-believing church here grew and grew. A few years ago, the church we attend - Avenue Community Church – employed me as their Assistant Pastor, with a long-term view of planting a church in Eyres Monsell. So that’s where we are! I am Avenue’s Assistant Pastor leading the team involved in growing a church here.

Growing a church?

Research shows that a church that is quickly planted by a middle class* church in a working class* area is unlikely to reach the community as well as it would want to, because it inevitably becomes a church for middle class* folk.

By slowly growing a church, our hope is to follow a missionary model for outreach. By moving into the area, getting involved in the estate, meeting and growing friendships with locals, we hope to create opportunities to share the gospel this way. Our prayer is that we grow the need to begin a local church here with local people saved and serving in it alongside the team.

The Team

We have 9 adults and 4 children committed to the work here so far:
Prayer Needs

More people - We are really thankful for the people committed to the mission so far, but we would love more people to join us.

Making contacts – With all the COVID restrictions, it’s been really hard to make fresh contacts here. Please pray for the team that we would all be able to increase our involvement within the community and get to know people well.

Contacts – Pray that the relationships we have made continue to grow and deepen. Jamie and I have had opportunity to share the bible with some Mums at the school gate, so please pray that the seeds grow in fertile soil. Please pray especially for J who Jamie has been reading the Bible with, and for Z who Dan’s given a Bible to recently.

Housing – Some of the team is currently house hunting – please pray that God would provide suitable housing in a timely fashion for them.

We are convinced that God has ‘many people in this city’ (Acts 18:10) who just don’t know it yet, so thank you so much for partnering with us in prayer for this estate.

* I’m aware that the terms “working class” and “middle class” are far too broad to be accurate, but I've used them here for the sake of brevity.
