LANIER DANCE NEWS

Congratulations to Lanier Dance, who made history on Saturday by attending two different competitions on the same day for the first time ever! A rescheduled competition from the snowstorm, added to a previously scheduled competition, led to a busy and ultimately successful day, when Dance Alliance, the team made up of Dance Company and Dance Crew, were named the Middle School State Champion Team and Officers!

In addition to their State Champion title, Dance Alliance placed 8 th overall at their competition, including all the high schools and studios. The team received an Outstanding Overall Technique Award and the team and officers received Outstanding Overall Choreography Awards. They earned First Place High Point Awards in Team Hip Hop, Team Jazz, Team Kick, Team Novelty, Team Open, Officer Contemporary, Officer Hip Hop, Officer Novelty, and Officer Pom and Second Place High Point Awards in Team Lyrical and Team Pom. They also brought home Super Sweepstakes Awards for the team and officers.
Dance Showcase also had an awesome day and was named the Overall Regional Grand Champion Middle School Team. They were also the Regional Grand Champion Medium Middle School Team and took home a Best in Class Award in every category they entered- Team Contemporary, Team Jazz, Team Kick, and Team Pom. They were Academic Award of Excellence Winners! They earned an Outstanding Choreography Award for their Team Jazz and a Super Sweepstakes Award. Meredith Kinzel was theRegional Middle School Solo Winner and Zoe Ace was the First Runner Up in the Solo Division.
In the State Competition, Dance Showcase was named the Third Place State Champion Middle School Team, and State Champion winner in the Team Contemporary category! They won a Second Place High Point Award for their Team Jazz and Team Kick and a Third Place High Point Award for their Team Pom. Dance Classic was named the Regional Grand Champion Small Middle School Team! They won the Best in Class Award in every category they entered- Team Hip Hop, Team Lyrical, and Team Pom. They were Academic Award of Excellence Winners! They earned an Outstanding Choreography Award for their Team Hip Hop and a Super Sweepstakes Award.
Sixth grade Drill Team was the youngest team in the division and did a great job by earning a Sweepstakes Award for their performances! Even though they were competing against 7th and 8th grade teams, they placed in every category they entered- Second Place High Point in Team Hip Hop and Team Novelty, Third Place High Point in Team Jazz, and Fourth Place High Point in Team Pom.
It was a long day, but we brought home some serious hardware! Amazing job, dancers!

8th Grade IB Community Project Deadline Change
Our 8th graders have been hard at work on their IB Middle Years Programme culminating service project for the past few months.  In an effort to provide more time for students, the Lanier administration has made the decision to move the project presentation due date to the week of April 19th.  We hope this will allow students to meet their goals and create presentations that authentically showcase the many different ways our campus took action in our global communities.  If you have questions about the project, please contact Ms. Rhymes via email.

When to stay home and other steps Lanier students, teachers, and staff should take to protect themselves and prevent the spread of COVID-19.
PLUS UPDATE FOR SPRING BREAK

Lanier students, staff, and teachers should stay home if they have tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, are showing symptoms of COVID-19, or have recently had close contact with a person with COVID-19, including household members. Students or staff who have family members who test positive for SARS-CoV-2 should stay home, notify Nurse Hechler, self-quarantine and continue to monitor symptoms.
Nurse Hechler will approve your return to school date.

Nurse Hechler has noted that, through contact tracing, 90% of exposures and positive cases come from after school/weekend get togethers where masks are not worn.  Meeting with people outside of your household for meals & parties is risky.  You are at your most vulnerable in these situations – mask off, less than 6 feet apart for longer than 15 minutes.
Stay vigilant and safe, Lanier Family!

Travel Recommendations
https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/index.html
HISD follows CDC recommendations for ALL travel.  Looking at this web site there is no country you can go to without a 7 day quarantine after.
NEW THIS WEEK!!!!
Notify Nurse if you are traveling out of the country for spring break.

Virtual Parent Workshop:
What We’ve Learned During the 2020/2021 Pandemic
Keys to student success in a blended world.
We have noticed some common denominators in students who are struggling and how to help them stay caught up.  Please join Mr. Maluski and Ms. Garza as they discuss some of the common strategies that can be put in place to offer support and accountability to students who might be struggling with school, either remotely or face to face.

Rather than have a live presentation at school, we thought we would make use the virtual platform to honor social distancing protocol and make the material available at your convenience.  Please let Mr. Maluski know if you access the video, if you find it helpful and if there are other topics you would like to see discussed.

As always, feel free to reach out if you have questions or need support about this topic or any other.

Thanks,
Mr. Maluski

Lanier Middle School Parents Incoming and Current

Parents!
Did your child miss Photo Day at school?
No worries! Here is how we can get your child in the 2021 Yearbook!

Choose an appropriate portrait photo from your camera roll or take one on the spot and
upload it through ybkplus.com.
Here's How…
 On your phone, go to www.ybkplus.com.
 Once on the site, you will enter the email that is on file with the school.
 A code will then be emailed to you to verify identity.
 Choose My Portrait (the first choice at the top), select the photo (from the camera roll on your phone) you want to use as your child’s portrait, make sure your child’s face fits inside the face opening, then submit!

You can watch a video here: https://bit.ly/3af3n1r

The yearbook staff reserves the right to reject any photo that does not accurately represent the student identified, does not follow proper student dress code and/or does not meet publications standards.

Thanks for your help!   We’re working hard on creating a yearbook that captures this historic school year.  If you haven’t already ordered yours, you can do so at jostensyearbooks.com, or go to Lanier’s website at https://www.houstonisd.org/lanier to order.
You can also order by clicking here: http://bit.ly/ordertheyearbook
