We were extremely concerned to hear from one of our members about a decision a clinician took very recently to place a DNACPR note on the file of someone they support simply because the person has a learning disability and we know that, despite the CQC report published a few months ago, this is still very much a live concern for us to be on the look out for.
 
ARC is working hard to make sure that policy and decision-makers understand how concerned we are in the sector about the absence of news on the short term funding for social care in relation to PPE and infection control, as well as the decision not to include social care in the Spring budget. Read the Learning Disability Today piece to see how united the sector is on this topic.
 
Do make sure you read about the Good Things Foundation opportunity to provide people who may not otherwise be able to connect with friends and loved ones with a tablet – the closing date is Monday 15th March.

Free Tablets for Learning Disability Services via Good Things Foundation
The new Digital Lifeline scheme, funded by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, will provide 5,000 internet enabled tablets. Any organisation that supports people with learning disabilities can apply. Successful applicants will receive the tablets for free, which are preloaded with data and provided with technical support.

For every device you receive, your organisation will get a grant of £100 to support the cost of helping the individual to learn how to use their device safely and confidently. The deadline for applications is 12pm Monday 15th March.

Accessibility and Census 2021 
Census Day is 21 March 2021. Everyone must complete or be included in the census and provide accurate information. The Census is online, using an access code in the letter about the Census, but people can ask for a paper copy to be posted to them.
There is more about the census and how it operates at Census 2021.
If people need help, they can:
  • ask someone else to fill it in for them, or help them if they can't do it themselves
  • get help to complete the census online: Find a support centre
  • access web chat, call on the phone or use the text relay system from the contact page
For care staff who may be asked to help people complete the census, there is guidance on Getting started: Completing the census for someone else. This includes a section on helping someone who lacks the capacity to answer for themselves.

‘Broken': The psychological trauma suffered by family carers of children and adults with autism and/or learning disabilities
The Challenging Behaviour Foundation's trauma survey investigates the availability and effectiveness of trauma support for family carers of children and adults with learning disabilities and/or autism. The findings from the survey provide evidence that the current system is dramatically failing families and that too often their interaction with 'the system' and services adds to, or is the cause of, trauma and its devastating impact.
