2021: ERC, Plan S & community engagement

New ERC project

We are excited to have launched our new project* for the European Research Council (ERC). The aim of the project is to improve our services to ERC funded authors, making it easier to comply with ERC requirements. The project is in line with the ongoing policy development within cOAlition S.

The ERC collection in the OAPEN Library currently consists of 383 publications (books and book chapters) from 54 publishers. More information in the ERC section on the OAPEN website - https://oapen.org/funders/erc-european-research-council

We will be introducing two new services by summer 2022: the (usage) Dashboard service and the Notification service and we will engage in the discussion around green open access for books. OAPEN is seeking to gather input from the OA books community through the Voices of the Community series

Voices from the Community series

The Open Access Books Network (OABN), coordinated by OAPEN, OPERAS, ScholarLed and SPARC Europe, is hosting a series of open, free-to-attend workshops from March to May on what a Plan S for books should look like – seeking to gather a broad range of perspectives from the OA book community. As part of this series, OAPEN will lead a session on 'green OA for books'.

cOAlition S, will issue a statement before the end of 2021 on their principles as they apply to monographs and book chapters together with related implementation guidance.

Discussions will feed into a policy document that will be created by SPARC Europe, and presented to cOAlition S as they consider a Plan S for books. Find out more and sign up here

DOAB migration

In February, the Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB), a service by OAPEN Foundation and OpenEdition, has successfully migrated to a new open source environment, based on DSpace 6 and added new features. The community-driven discovery service indexes and provides access to over 36,000 scholarly, peer-reviewed open access books from around 500 publishers worldwide. The transition of DOAB to an open source environment follows one year after OAPEN's successful DSpace 6 migration and is a next step in line with our commitment to open science.

OPERAS Report: Academic Libraries and Open Access Books in Europe. A Landscape Study

As a result of the cooperation between the OPERAS-P and COPIM projects, a report was published in January: ‘Academic Libraries and Open Access Books in Europe.
A Landscape Study.’ The report by Agata Morka and Rupert Gatti, provides an understanding of how academic libraries work and how they engage with OA initiatives. OAPEN is an executive member of OPERAS and actively engaged in both the OPERAS-P and COPIM projects.

The full report is available here: https://zenodo.org/record/4483773#.YE85LWhKg2z

OPERAS Survey

As part of OPERAS, a survey is conducted of European publishing organisations on business models for OA monographs. We would like to encourage especially smaller European publishers (but other perspectives are also welcome) to participate:

The deadline is extended to April 14th.

A brief saga about open access books

Published in Nordic Perspectives on Open Science (NOPOS), OAPEN Director Niels Stern gives a personal account on the rationale behind OA book publishing and infrastructures. He stresses the need for collaboration between the actors in the community to sustain OA book publishing to the benefit of the scholarly community and the public at large. The full article can be accessed here:
