Nature's Superheroes: Life at the Limits

🏀 An AmericanAirlines Arena by any other name

Plus, Muhammad Ali in Miami Beach and mask mandates.

Hello and welcome to Thursday, Miami.

Yesterday we lead things off by tackling Miami’s bid for World Cup greatness. We subsequently heard from several New Tropic readers who shared their thoughts on our fair city hosting the biggest event in soccer. Here’s what Christina S. had to say about whether or not we’re ready to step up to the pitch:

“Like the Olympics, World Cups have actually been the excuse and opportunity to update local infrastructure in the cities where they have taken place. There’s no reason for our Global City not to do so as well especially now that we have some first-class leaders at the helm of our City and County.

“And — frankly — I would love to see the Red Devils (best team in the world) win right here in Miami!”

Thanks for weighing in, Christina. While The New Tropic can’t speak on the prowess of Belgium’s national team, we feel more than comfortable commenting on the excellence of the country’s musical exports.

Meanwhile, Stan F. struck a similar tone:

“Hosting the World Cup in Miami would be a total dream, but our current infrastructure makes this the worst idea ever! Silver lining.... this is a great opportunity to turn that around over the next 5 years in preparation for the influx of the international community that will be joining us for the tournament. Hopefully our local politicians can figure that out, which I have total faith in, of course.”

In any case, while we wait to learn if the World Cup is coming to Miami, here’s another sports-related development already taking place…

🏀 Get ready to start referring to the AAA as the FTX: The AmericanAirlines Arena might be renamed the FTX Arena as soon as tomorrow. FTX, a cryptocurrency exchange, has reportedly negotiated a 19-year, $135 million-dollar deal to sponsor the home of the Miami Heat. County commissioners will decide whether or not to seal the deal during a meeting tomorrow. (Miami Herald / WPLG Local 10)

😷 Miami-Dade vs. the state of Florida: Despite Gov. Ron DeSantis’ orders undermining municipalities’ mask mandates and rules for curbing the spread of COVID-19, the county is still enforcing pandemic-related regulations. According to Miami New Times, police, code enforcement officers, and park rangers are continuing to hand out masks to anyone not seen wearing one, and non-compliant businesses can still expect to receive citations. 🎉 The North Beach Bandshell has been busy with a spate of exciting announcements in recent days. The outdoor concert venue — which has been successfully hosting both socially distanced shows and livestreamed performances with The Rhythm Foundation — will be the site of The Outlet this Saturday. The event is a benefit for Buddy System Miami’s Community Fridge Program and features merch for sale and performances broadcast at 4worthdoing.com. The Bandshell also announced yesterday that the opening and closing nights of this year’s Miami Jewish Film Festival will be held there in April. (North Beach Bandshell via Instagram)

🗓 Throwback Thursday: Muhammad Ali in Miami

(📸: @thenewtropic)

📷 If you want a real throwback of a Thursday, HistoryMiami Museum is currently hosting a photo exhibit titled "Muhammad Ali in Miami: Training for the 'Fight of the Century.'" The collection shows the legendary boxer — who sporadically lived in Miami neighborhoods including Overtown — training in Miami Beach and occupying a city that’s long since changed. The exhibit is running through August 29 — the shot of him standing outside Wolfie’s is a must-see. (Miami New Times)

🎉 Knight New Work 2020 winner: Melissa Cobblah

Cuban-born and Miami-based choreographer Melissa Cobblah Gutierrez sees dance as a means to understand the many layers of the human experience.

Hear how nature, heritage, and emotion serve as the inspiration for her newest project, CuBlack: Invisibilized No Further! A dance film and performance that deconstructs the “invisibilized” oppression of Blackness inside the Cuban community and investigates how it has impacted its population in Miami.
