Historic Win for EFLTC

EFLTC has long had a reputation for doubles dominance, stemming from the early 2000’s when Scott Marshall, Paul Hemsley and Sasha Ristic led the Club to back-to-back Men’s Division 1 wins. But it was the Ladies turn to build on that reputation when they won both doubles in straights sets to steal a come-from-behind win against Peppy Grove in the Ladies Division 1 Semi-final two weeks ago and then backed that up with a critical doubles-win against top-of-the-table Scarborough on Saturday. Not since 1984 has EFLTC raised the Shield in a top Ladies’ pennant comp.

The day started with young star 14yo Peyton (Ducky) Duckett demolishing her much more experienced and well-credentialled opponent 6-1 6-1.
But the parallel effort by our #1 player Lucille (Thriller) Miller was one for the ages. In 37degC heat, and playing against higher rated Charleen Tiwari, a returning US College player and 5 years her senior, Lucille showed durability and maturity to close out a vital match 7-6-6-3 after staring down a setpoint in the first set. Being up two rubbers to nil against the top team was certainly not in the script, so it was an inspired Madeleine (Maddie) Yeats and Justine (J-Bomb) Hayward-Janney who took to the courts to try to seal the day. Alas, after each securing the first set, a determined Scarborough fought back to take both matches in Super-Tiebreakers.

So the equation stood: 2-rubbers all, 6 set to 4 in our favour.  A win by EFLTC in either doubles would secure the day!

Maddie Yeats teamed with our other young star 14yo Talia (T-Bomb) Edgar, but it was to super-sub Narelle Hemsley, teamed with the irrepressible Ducky (well coached in doubles trickery by Scott Marshall), that the team looked to for the killer blow. A 10-year State-League #1 player with two WA Open wins to her credit, no one could doubt Narelle’s ability to handle the pressure, and Peyton has shown a grit belying her youth since she first felt the buzz of a ripped forehand winner in anger as a six-year old. They opened their account with a strong 7-5 first set, but again Scarborough bounced back 6-1 in the second set, and stole an early lead in the Super-Tiebreaker 3-1.  In fading light, the scales were tilting the wrong way for a desperate EFLTC.

But the strongest steel is forged in fire, and Narelle and Peyton weren’t about to melt in the heat.  Setting themselves at their task, they “dialled in”, “locked it down”, “refused to yield” …… and reeled off nine straight points to seal a historic win for East Freo, and for their team!!!!
All season this fantastic group of young ladies (including their other teammate Ruby Braden) have carried themselves with professionalism, composure and good humour, and the Club couldn’t be prouder of you.  Well done.  Left to Right: Justine, Talia, Peyton, Maddie, Lucille and Narelle.
Well done also to our 13U Green-Ball Division 4 kids (Tex, Ptoly, Olivier, Ryan and Duke) who enjoyed a close win by just one set on Sunday.

Letter to the Editor

Dear Nadia.
I am wondering if the EFLTC would consider organising a crowdfunding link for me. To raise some money to enable me to afford some tennis lessons, I would not need many as my only weakness are my forehand, backhand, service, on the net, ability to read the play etc.

My parents were able to afford two lessons for me in 1968 with Arthur Marshall and  60 other Wesley boys in 1968 and I seem to have forgotten what he said and I certainly did not win any bottles of Coke Jeff King won them all.
The main reason I am asking is the outcome of my efforts in the current Club Championships
Singles 6-0 6-0 , 6-0 6-0
Men’s Doubles with top player Grant 6-0 6-0, 6-0 6-0
Mixed Doubles with champion player Susie 6-2 6-4 , 6-3 6-0 Obviously Susie has great court coverage
I do feel if my tennis improved slightly it would be to my opponent's benefit as they at least get a warm-up instead of fetching balls for me.
Also please see attached a text from President Paul as even more evidence.
I would like to suggest it is appropriate that the money raised from the crowdfunding I give 90% of it to the EFLTC for their co-ordination of collecting the funds that come in.
Kind regards
Kit

Meet A Member

One minute with...   Ryan Bacich

1.    How long have you been a member at EFLTC? Started playing Social tennis with Nadia’s group on a Tuesday night just before Christmas.  It was then when I thought… Geez this isn’t too bad…. having a hit after work, by the river on a barmy night followed by beers on the balcony accompanied by a great bunch!! I’m in!!! -- Joined up as a member in Feb :)

2.    What’s your favourite tennis shot? A beautifully executed swinging serve that sets up a lunging backhand volley into the open court. I’ve not yet mastered it but it does look good when the pros do it on TV.

3.    What’s your Achilles heel?   Probably the net – it always seems to get in the way of my ‘would be’ shots. Other than that trying to find time to practise more!!    Oh… and how could I forget.. that bloody wind that seems to frequent the river side courts at EF is not something I enjoy playing against.

4.    Favourite tennis player?  I used to love Pat Cash growing up until my Mum took me to watch him practise prior to a Davis Cup game in Perth. She politely asked Pat if she could take a photo only to be told “if it clicks”– Hmm ….not quite the response a young kid was after from his idol – found out later he really hated people taking his photos…. Anyway, sticking with Pat name I don’t think Australia could find a better player and sports role model than the serve volley master from Mount Isa -- Patrick Michael Rafter. He was a Gun and I really loved the way he went about it his tennis!!

5.    Favourite holiday destination?  Way too many to mention;  Good old Rotto, Eagle Bay, Broome and anywhere up north or where the sun is out. Also; Queenstown, New York, San Sebastian and Mykonos would have to get a mention.

6.    When not playing tennis, we can find you….? Most likely ferrying Jasmine (14) and/or Quentin (13) around like a lost Uber driver…. They play many sports and I do my best to be present at most if time permits. I’m also the Yr8 footy coach at the Palmyra Junior Football Club so tend to spend a fair bit of time there – I really enjoy watching young players develop and get the best out of themselves. Other than that I love going out on the hunt for new and exciting places to eat and drink.

Fran's Club History Quiz

Answers to round seven

Last week’s easy question about recognising the three ladies was only open to newish members. This gave newbies’ a distinct advantage and still gave long time members a look back in time. The answer was Carol Barton, Fran Lamotte and Sheila Cooksey who is holding
a small beer glass.

The winner of Round 7 with a 100% score is Pauline Hancock. Her drink voucher will be in a white wine glass on Saturday.
Round Eight

In 2000 who was the President, the Vice President and the Financial Manager?
As a side note, did you know that in 2000 for beer, the greatest percent profit beer was Emu
Draft (cost $2.50) and Hahn Premium Light ($2.00). The most popular beer was 303 (never
heard of it) and the most popular wine was Ashwood Grove Semillon from a choice of 10; in
spirits it was vodka. So now you know. This will of course lead into next week’s question.
