An Australian First - Superbugs!

Urban Utilities Unveils Australian-First Tech in Brisbane!
You may have seen a recent ABC TV news story about poo-loving superbugs in Queensland’s largest sewage treatment plant?
They are there courtesy of research by Urban Utilities, the plant operator. They’re called anammox bugs. The superbugs feed on our wastewater and make treatment cleaner, greener and cheaper. It’s great news for the environment as Brisbane and the South-East region continues to grow and more people are showering, doing their laundry and, well, using the toilet!
I was able to get a sneak peek of the Australian-first green technology during a recent tour of Luggage Point Resource Recovery Centre and I can tell you these bugs are small, but mighty and are doing a great job!

Batteries power our phones, laptops, kids’ toys, cars and essentially make our world go round, but they are putting lives at risk when they aren’t disposed of safely. When we think about the journey our rubbish goes on, from the kitchen bin to the street for collection and then to waste facilities, if there’s a battery in the mix, the risk of a fire starting along the way soars.
Disposing batteries responsibly is easy and you can start by safely storing them in a box or container at home (this includes rechargeable batteries found in power tools and left inside broken toys and laptops, phones and tablets) and bringing them with you next time you visit your local resource recovery centre, Aldi, Battery World or Officeworks.
