Hello lovely,

If you’ve been watching the news you’ll know parts of Australia have gone from dealing with drought to devastating floods, and we’re currently experiencing a once in 100 year weather event.

Houses have been flooded or floated away, people are being evacuated and animals are scrambling to get to higher ground, including a blanket of spiders. If you’re arachnophobic DO NOT CLICK on this link! But if you’re curious about the crazy spiders here, you’ll want to see this one.

A few people have reached out to ask if I’m safe and while my town was surrounded by bushfires last year, we’re lucky to not have to worry about flooding.

Not only is Glen Innes one of the highest towns in Australia at 1,062m above sea level, but our house is in one of the higher spots in town. So while our chook house may have flooded (don’t worry, the girls have high perches to get around that one) we’re among the lucky ones.

That said, I did wonder how far the creek through the park would rise, and whether it might affect something special that started in Glen Innes last week.

The Walk of Light has been created by local couple Cass and Geoff Hill who have a lighting business, Mr And Mrs Hill, that usually sprinkles fairy light magic on weddings, special events and venues.

Now they’ve transformed part of Glen Innes parklands into a beautiful spot to visit at night with a 30m fairy light tunnel, a big tree wrapped in lights, and lights around the rotunda.

Last Friday night I was under the tunnel when the lights came on for the first time and loved how excited big kids and small got as soon as those lights came on.

I kept walking through the tunnel and shared a glimpse of the fairy light fun on my Instagram @TheAmandaWoods and soon changed my profile pic over to the fairy lights too.

I don’t know what it is about them that makes us happy, but they just do. Fortunately the water hasn’t made it up to the lights and the worst of the rain is over here so they should go on to twinkle another day.

If you’re close enough to Glen Innes to come see, The Walk of Light is on until the 16th of April. And you bet I’ll be back amongst them as soon as I can.

So how about you? Are you a sucker for fairy lights too? And any theories on why we smile when we see them?

xA
