Dear <<First Name>>,

With a timely break in the recent flurry of 2016 Tuscan releases, we are delighted to offer a beautiful Rioja with the latest release of the 2014 Imperial Gran Reserva from CVNE.
The Gran Reserva is only produced in the very best vintages, after spending at least 3 years in the bottle to quality and with no 2013 due to bad weather conditions, we welcome the gorgeous 2014.

Luis Gutierrez (Wine Advocate) - 94 pts

"No 2013 was produced, as it was a very challenging year in Haro. So, from the 2012 I tasted last time, we jumped to the 2014 Imperial Gran Reserva, an icon among classical Rioja. The grapes for this blend of 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo were picked during the first half of October at a low 13.5% alcohol and were fermented in small oak vats followed by malolactic in concrete and two years in barrel. The bottles are kept for at least 36 months before they are released. As the Imperial Reserva, the style of this wine has to be preserved (they can innovate in the new Asúa range). There is a developed and subtle nose reminiscent of petrol (is it mineral?), hints of iodine and sweet spices. The palate is powerful and still a little tannic, as the wine was released even earlier because they skipped one vintage. Serious, austere, faithful to its character."

Following a few difficult vintages in Rioja since the phenomenal 2010, we now have the 2014 Imperial Gran Reserva

Made from very old vines with 85% Tempranillo, 10% Garacha & 5% Mazuelo grapes, in only the best vintages, this represents a very good wine that can be drunk immediately or cellared for 20 years.

Food pairings - Roundness and balance make this wine perfect for pairing with cheese, red meat, game and oily fish, or even to be enjoyed simply in good company!

The 2014 Vintage was officially declared by the Rioja Control Board as - Very Good

This is a wonderful example of a traditional Rioja wine, from one of the most famous producers in the region, in a vintage that is worthy of the Gran Reserva label.

At the best prices on the UK marketplace and with some large formats, the only way for drink and share Rioja!
Imperial Gran Reserva

85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano & 5% Mazuelo

Imperial is one of the big names of Spain. It is a true classic in Rioja and was first produced in the twenties. Its name comes from a special bottling for the English market, in a measure called ‘Pinta Imperial’ or ‘Imperial Pint’ which is approximately half a litre. It has always been characterised by its very high and constant quality in every vintage.
In our best and oldest vineyards we make a manual harvesting in boxes and an exhaustive selection in the
field and in the winery, obtaining grapes of great quality. Once in the winery the grapes are macerated in cold for an improvement of the alcoholic fermentation, which will be carried out in French oak vats. Then there is a two-year aging in French and American oak barrels, ending the process with a bottle aging in our century-old cellars until it goes to market.
Winemaker's Notes

"Intense ruby red color. The nose is rich and enticing with black and red berry fruit and liquorice notes. The palate is generously fruity with toasty oak, supple tannins and savoury balsamic nuances and a long finish."

"Classic CVNE, classic Imperial, this is a cuvée of Tempranillo with 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo, made to mature and develop further in bottle. The oak needs a little more time to integrate, but this is the latest in a superb line up of Gran Reservas from María Larrea: dense, rich and concentrated with vibrant acidity and the freshness and focus of a cooler year."
James Suckling - 94 pts

"A fine-tuned and polished Gran Reserva with lots of finesse and linear character. Medium body. Refined and beautiful."
All prices are 'In Bond' and exclude, duty, VAT & delivery and subject to availability and confirmation.
The wines are immediately available.

"This muscular red has a thick, dense texture and muscular tannins. Plum and currant flavors mingle with clove, cola, vanilla and baking spice notes. Comes on strong, but the orange peel acidity gives way to a gentle, floral finish. Tempranillo, Graciano and Mazuelo.

CVNE (Compania Vinicola del Norte de Espana)

The history of the company begins in the winery located in Haro in the neighborhood of the railway station “barrio de la estacion “ which dates back to 1879. Close to the railway tracks which during a time drove into the cellar to easily transport easily the wine in oak barrels and then in bottles.
The 545 hectares of vineyards that CVNE owns account for 50% of the company's production, and are distributed between the two subregions of Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa, an area of calcareous clay soils, ferrous clay and alluvial soils, under the influence of the Atlantic and Mediterranean climates. The winery is composed of 22 buildings, which include the original 1879 premises, as well as the plant designed and built by the Eiffel architectural studio in 1909. This winery combines tradition, quality and innovation. In 1940 it was pioneer with the construction of the first concrete fermentation cellar in Spain. In the 80´s it was pioneer with the first vinification plant non aggressive, the use of gravity.
