Dear friends and neighbors,

Santa Clara County moves to Orange Tier on the State’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy! Click here to read to official update from the County. Within less than one month we have been able to move from the Purple to Orange Tiers because our community has been safe, mindful and determined to beat this pandemic. As we did with the transition to the Red Tier, we hope the following information helps you understand what this change means and to keep staying safe.

Please remember, we all need to work together to keep our risk of COVID-19 low. Wear a mask (two even), keep your distance, and get vaccinated when it’s your turn. Additional information from the state is available online at https://covid19.ca.gov/safer-economy/

Please, when it's your turn make your appointment to get vaccinated. Visit SCCFreeVax.org for full details. REMINDER - Santa Clara County is under a “no wrong door” access to vaccines - which means you may register for a vaccine regardless of insurance or vaccination site.

Mask Guidance Information
Stay masked during indoor and outdoor activities. View the updated guidance here, or see the simple chart below for a quick rundown of mask effectiveness. Double-masking continues to be the easiest way to stay safe when we are out in the community.

Least Effective Masks  Better Masks Best Mask
  • Cloth mask with
    1 or 2 layers
  • Bandana
  • Gaiter
  • Fitted medical mask
  • Cloth mask with 3 layers
  • Double mask
    (Medical + cloth)
  • KN95
  • N95

Getting To Yellow Tier
We'll get there, just like our transition to the Orange Tier, we have to make sure cases are declining and we're getting vaccinated. You can see the required numbers for us to move into Yellow Tier:

Here's a checklist that we can all utilize to do our part to help our county reach the next lower tier:

  • Stay home. Do our best to limit risk and exposure.
  • Stay outdoors. Outdoor activities are far safer than indoor ones.
  • Stay Masked. Wear a mask in public. We encourage double masking too!
Consistent use of face coverings both indoors and outdoors is very effective
  • Wash your hands regularly. Stay conscious about our health.
  • Socially distance. Keep at least six feet of physical distance.
  • Avoid crowds. Limit mixing with people you don’t live with or a part of your bubble.
  • When it's your turn - Get Vaccinated!
  • Be smart, do our part. Staying healthy starts with being mindful.

I'm contacting federal and state officials to get us more vaccines. While we wait for our supply to increase, we urge everyone to remember that indoor activities are much higher risk than outdoor activities and to take every step to reduce risk as much as possible. This is especially critical given the recent detection of new cases of concerning variants in Santa Clara County. Let's continue making smart decisions.

Before we close, I would like to share with you my comments from the March 23 Board of Supervisors meeting in regard to Item 18 Recommendation of implementation of an anti-hate community outreach and education campaign (AAPI hate crimes/violence response). Thank you to my staff, colleagues, County staff, community leaders and our Black, Latinx, Muslim, Jewish, LGBTQ+ and more communities that spoke in solidarity. Hate has no home here.

Thank you for your support. We will prevail. Stay safe and healthy.

Warm regards,
