Join us at Open Belgium
29 March 2021

On the 29th of March 13:00-13:45, Frederik Coppens, Miguel Roncoroni, Ignacio Eguinoa of ELIXIR Belgium will be giving talks as part of Open Belgium 2021.

Their talks will be focused on three platforms supporting COVID-19 research: The European COVID-19 Data Platform for the rapid and open sharing of biomedical data; Galaxy, an open platform enabling reproducible data analysis and how it is used to analyse and publish SARS-CoV-2 sequences to public data repositories; and Workflowhub.eu, a registry for workflows, fast-tracked to collect COVID-19 related workflows. Register for Open Belgium
Open Call - ELIXIR Knowledge Exchange Scheme

ELIXIR supports collaborative partnerships between industry and ELIXIR members to drive innovation in bioinformatics. The ELIXIR Knowledge Exchange Scheme covers travel and accommodation expenses, as well as some contributions to ELIXIR members (individuals or teams from one institute within ELIXIR) to give them the opportunity to work on a collaborative project with an industry partner. Applications must be made jointly by an ELIXIR member and their industry partner. Find out more about how to apply.

The closing date of this call is 31 October 2021. Two examples of current projects can be found online.
Brokering results in the availability of SARS-CoV-2 data from Belgian patients in the COVID-19 data portal

The development of tests, treatments, vaccines and other elements of the global response against the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic depends on the availability of open and FAIR data.

By means of automatic submission, we uploaded SARS-CoV-2 sequence data from Belgian patients (AZ Rivierenland Antwerp and Hôpital Erasme-ULB) to the COVID-19 data portal. This was accomplished with the SARS-CoV-2 sequence submission tool we developed last year. Discover the tool, guidance and demonstration video here

Help EMBL-EBI maintain its services and have your say through their impact survey

EMBL-EBI hosts some of the world’s most important collections of biological data including UniProt, Ensembl, ChEMBL, ENA and Europe PubMed Central. They have recently published a survey aiming to assess the worldwide value of bioinformatics resources available through its platform.

If you use open data in your work, please give 15 minutes of your time to fill in this impact survey. Your input is extremely important and will help EMBL-EBI maintain and develop its resources for the global scientific community. The survey closes on 31 March 2021, responses are anonymized and all personal data treated as confidential.
PLAZA becomes an ELIXIR Recommended Interoperability Resource

After a comprehensive internal and external evaluation process, PLAZA becomes an ELIXIR Recommended Interoperability Resource (RIR). Together with three other resources (BioImage Informatics Index, FAIRtracks and OmicsDI - read about all four here), PLAZA has now joined the list alongside the existing ten.

Recommended Interoperability Resources are ELIXIR services considered to be vital in ensuring that data is Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable (FAIR). All ELIXIR RIRs are open to everyone, free of charge, with research funding agencies often referencing the collection as an instrument for researchers to fulfil their data management obligations.
Support COVID-19 data sharing by signing the open letter

We need open data, especially open SARS-CoV-2 sequence data, and open science to beat COVID-19 and to prepare for future outbreaks.

To address these needs, the European COVID-19 Data Portal was launched in April 2020. It is the interface – the visible part – of the European COVID-19 Data Platform and it provides a single-entry point for researchers to upload, access and analyse COVID-19 related data and specialist datasets. This approach supports the advancement of COVID-19 research and knowledge sharing on a global scale.

Support the European COVID-19 Data Portal by signing their open letter.

MEET OUR NEW TEAM MEMBERS
Alexander Halksworth - Communications and Community Outreach Officer

Alexander joins ELIXIR Belgium in the role of Communications and Community Outreach Officer. Along with writing newsletters, website content, and other communications materials, he will be involved in the exploration and implementation of impact evaluation to ensure the good operation of the Node.
Rafael Andrade Buono - Data Steward

Rafael joined us earlier this year and is working on the continuous improvement of research data management tools and strategies. By connecting expertise inside and outside of ELIXIR with the needs of researchers, the aim is to facilitate the production and management of data that is FAIR by design.
The Galaxy Training Network has released a new video highlighting all they have to offer. We invite you to have a look and to share the video with your colleagues. The video was produced by Geert Bonamie from the VIB Bioinformatics Core.
