Caregivers' Circle

Connecting English-speakers from the Quebec City region who are providing care to older adults, no matter where they live

Hope is in the air!

A message from Jan

Did you enjoy that brief taste of spring in mid-March? The sunshine and melting snow were just what the doctor ordered after a long COVID-19 locked down winter! Hope was literally in the air as our government announced that everyone over 16 years of age should receive at least one dose of the vaccine by la fête nationale.

As more and more Quebecers have been able to make an appointment to get the jab (or as we move up on the priority list), we seem to be sharing a collective sense of relief and euphoria. There is much cause for rejoicing, but...

Questions & answers

Questions caregivers are asking

1) "My family and I have concerns about the care our mother is receiving in her long-term care centre. The people in charge are not taking these concerns seriously. How do I go about lodging a formal complaint?"

In cases where caregivers have concerns or complaints with healthcare services it is important to share these issues with  staff on site as many problem areas can be resolved swiftly at the  local level. If the immediate staff person does not or cannot  find a suitable solution, the next step is to speak with their superior. If the issue is still not resolved to your satisfaction then a formal complaint should be placed. Making a complaint can be a positive gesture that will benefit others in your community. For more details on this process please visit the ciusss website. If you would like accompaniment in the complaint process contact CAAP-CN for free assistance. They have English-speaking staff to assist you.

2) "The English-speaking senior I am caring for no longer has a family doctor as his physician recently retired. The Jeffery Hale emergency room is still closed due to the pandemic and we do not know where to turn for medical assistance in English. What can we do?"

Firstly, ensure that you have registered for a new family doctor on the web.  Secondly, a new protocol has been put in place to help all English-speakers in your situation until the ER at the Jeffery Hale reopens.

3)  "What community resources are available to support family caregivers as we accompany loved ones who are at the end of life?"

Albatros Québec offers  free accompaniment and support services to people  in the palliative care at home, in long-term care or in hospital. and their caregivers. Although the Albatros Québec website is only in French rest assured their staff and caring volunteers are wiling and  able to offer  assistance in English.
Because the Jeffery Hale emergency is closed
