Student Spotlight

Please meet our Student Spotlight, Nicholas Lee! Nicholas is currently a sophomore doing a double major in Computer Science: Data Science and Mathematics: Data Science. Below is our interview with Nicholas.

Why did you choose data science and why double major?
I chose data science because it seems like a good mix of computer programming usage and math knowledge, at least for me. As for the double major, if it was up to me, I'd just major in mathematics and study that more thoroughly. But for the sake of practicality, I decided to go into computer science as well. The credits work out pretty well too, lots of overlap, and I took a lot of AP courses in high school so a lot of my prerequisites were covered.

What are your plans for after graduation? career aspirations?
I'd like to become a data scientist one day. I'm not sure exactly what to do after graduation, but from searching up how to get hired as a data scientist, or any programmer in general, I'm going to have to come up with a lot of projects on real-world data. That's my immediate goal, to try and make good money.

Best college memory so far.
Currently I play music with some people, including my girlfriend, from a club on campus. So yeah anytime we play music, either just for fun or because of our monthly events, is always a good memory to have. The club is RUF if anyone happens to wonder, Reformed University Fellowship.

What advice would you give to underclassmen and/or peers?
If I'm being honest, just keep it simple. Do what you want and do it right.

How have you managed schooling during the COVID19 pandemic? Any advice for your peers?
I actually really like online school. I used to commute from Waipahu everyday and that was a lot of time wasted in traffic and whatnot. I'd also get tired quickly because driving rush hour is very draining. But now I can just go to my girlfriend's house and do classes there. I mean I can do it anywhere but that's where I prefer. In terms of the schoolwork itself, it's a little more self-directed obviously, and it's harder to get direct help. But I think the trade is pretty favorable. Online classes are just comfortable and convenient. Some advice? Don't miss a class. From my experience, missing just even one class just to chill or do something else breaks the habit of going to class and it makes a lot harder to convince yourself it's worth going.

Alumni Spotlight
Please meet our Alumni Spotlight, Kahlin Baughman!, Kahlin graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from our very department. Currently, Kahlin works on island at the Naval Information Warfare Center (NIWC), a lab under the United States Navy. In his position, Kahlin supports the Navy and their operations through the building and maintaining of computer softwares and systems. Below is our interview with Kahlin

1) How has your education & experiences at UH Mānoa prepared you for your current position?
More or less. The most helpful experience at Manoa was when I was working at ITS and some clubs I participated in. The ITS help fostered my development and work skills; while the clubs fostered my interpersonal skills.

2) What was your best college memory?
I don't have one specific college memory that stands out but what I do know is that college helped further develop my friendships with high school classmates as well as fostered some irreplaceable college friends.

3) What advice would you give to current computer science student?
If you are financially able to, enjoy it more. Study abroad, participate in clubs that may not relate to your major, do things that you find fun. In terms of getting a job after college, internships, and participating in clubs or extracurricular activities is your best bet. Even if your grades aren't the best, the internships and extracurriculars can make up for it. Doing these things may also help you realize what it is you enjoy and don't enjoy.
Combined Bachelor of Science and Master of Science (BaM) in Computer Science

The combined BS/MS degree program is intended to allow students the opportunity to receive both Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Computer Science in 5 years. To be admitted into the program, students must submit the Graduate Admissions Applications as well as all required program admission materials specified in the “Graduate Study” section by the start of their junior year (5th semester).

Requirements
Students pursuing this degree should meet the degree requirements for regular Master of Science in Computer Science. Gateway course: ICS 311 with a grade B+ or higher.

There are three pathways students can take depending on their BS degree option. Each pathway differs in the set of courses that can be double-counted for both the bachelor’s and master’s degree.

BS in Computer Science in Security Science and MS in Computer Science
The following courses can be double-counted in BS in Computer Science in Data Science track and MS in Computer Science. The minimum grade requirement is B (not B-) or higher. Bridge Courses: ICS 423, 621, 623.
