Challenges, Opportunities &
Growth in the Year of the Ox

Hi, <<First Name>>!

In this newsletter, we take a look back at some of the highlights and challenges we experienced in the first term of this academic year. Despite the large-scale disruption faced by students at our partner schools, we have grown and evolved in the "new normal" to provide our beneficiaries with dynamic support and learning opportunities. Read on to find out how we've been harnessing the possibilities of this new learning environment.

Highlights

CHANGE TO NEW VIDEO
Online learning support

In response to the need to provide more student-centred interactive online learning in the wake of COVID-19, we have launched 'Chatteris Learn'. Through two self-directed learning platforms, we are providing learners opportunities to practice authentic and communicative English language use to supplement their core learning. Eventually, we aim to make these platforms open source and available for all students in Hong Kong to use.

Community Outreach

Through our community programme, Chatteris Tutors support a range of less privileged Hong Kong citizens, ranging from SEN learners to domestic helpers. In recent months, we have continued to support a number of our community partners through online and face-to-face sessions.
New Funding Grant from the Kadoorie Charitable Foundation

Chatteris is delighted to announce that the Kadoorie Charitable Foundation has generously agreed to renew its sponsorship of our “One for One, Adopt a School” project with a grant that will allow us to expand “One for One” to four new secondary schools across the next three years!
New Team Members

This academic year we have welcomed thirty new Chatteris Tutors to the team. From undertaking their orientation online from their quarantine hotel rooms, to creating dynamic and engaging learning opportunities in school, these enthusiastic graduates have shown unwavering dedication to serving our student beneficiaries.

Anneliese, a Chatteris Tutor from our secondary programme wrote about her experience moving to Hong Kong in August 2020. Read her blog post here...

This month, we have also been glad to have Mariana Ganusiak join us as our new English Programme Executive. Mariana brings with her a wealth of educational and leadership experience in Ukraine, Turkey, China, and Cambodia.

Insight

Why continued school suspensions will impact less privileged students the most

Students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds have faced the greatest challenges during school suspension – their needs were unsuited for the overnight switch to remote learning.

Opportunities

Free Professional Development Webinars

Collaboration is a core value at Chatteris. During this challenging period of time it is important for us educators to come together and share our knowledge and experience for the benefit of the young people we serve. Through our partnership with Nord Anglia University (Asia), we are providing free, high-quality professional development webinars for teachers on topics including drama teaching, supporting struggling readers, and managing the cognitive load of learning.
