Stephanie Tells What ‘International Women’s Day’ Means To Her

Stephanie Schmidt on the farm – Photo by Alysha Sparks

Stephanie Schmidt leads a busy farm live, hubby, family and still finds time to do some great leadership tasks.

Steph starts off,
“As I sit down to write this, in the last 24 hours I have worked on getting the BAS completed for the farm business I have with my husband, I have had a strategy session for ACTforAg – my project I’m developing as the 2020 Agrifutures SA Rural Women’s Award Winner, I have shifted sheep ready for shearing, I attended my 6 year old’s school assembly, had a mug thrown by my 3 year old because the TV wasn’t working, was up through the night with my 7 month old, and have a few days of dishes on the sink that I haven’t gotten too yet.”

It is an inspiring and down to earth article, well worth a read by all.

Caravan Park Busy Again

By Peter on Mar 19, 2021 04:23 am
Eudunda Caravan Park - 6 bays full
Eudunda Caravan Park – 6 bays full

There were a couple weeks where the Eudunda Caravan Park was very quiet, only a few happy campers. So it is great to see the park thriving again this week. Eudunda was not the only quiet park last month, and it seems February can be a slow month for the industry.

The photo shows 6 of the 8 powered bays in use, and there were a few free campers back of the oval too.

The Eudunda Community Business and Tourism Committee (ECBAT) run the Eudunda Caravan Park and are proud to see it getting used so well. The people staying there bring welcome trade to our town. In the park’s first year of operation it was estimated that the park generated $54,000 within the community. That was with only 4 powered bays. ECBAT has recently been able to expand the number of powered sites to 8, (see ‘Eudunda Caravan Park Expands Ready For Tourism Increase‘) and expect an increase in the level of spend in our town.

There is some exciting news about to be released about our Eudunda Caravan Park and you can be involved too. Stay Tuned!

Have you recommended the Eudunda Caravan Park or one of our Accommodation Outlets lately?
Do you know where to look for that information – try the eudunda.net website
If you get the opportunity, Invite visitors to come and stay.

Council Representation Review Options Paper Available

By Peter on Mar 19, 2021 01:25 am

A reworded more up to date summary of the Representation Review can be found on the latest Council Newsletter, under the title “Representational Review“. You should read this. The important take away is this:

A public hearing will be held in Eudunda Town Hall on Wednesday 7 April 2021 at 7:00pm to hear and consider the submissions received.

Written submissions are invited from interested persons from Wednesday 24 February 2021 and should be addressed to the Chief Executive Officer, Regional Council of Goyder 1 Market Square, Burra SA 5417 or by email to council@goyder.sa.gov.au to be received no later than 4:00pm on Wednesday 24 March 2021.
Please indicate in your written submission if you wish to be heard in support of your submission at the public hearing.

Sadly Council Staff have recommended taking away some of the Eudunda Ward rather than what would be the preferred option for Eudunda in creating a third Ward Councillor to represent the electors in an equal fashion to the other wards. This in effect will penalize the Eudunda Ward and it’s electors for the next 10 years as we grown, and this will likely present a precedent in the future. Other wards should consider this carefully as in the next review it may affect them in a negative way too. Basically this is ‘bean counting’ and not looking to a positive future for the Goyder Region, and certainly not Eudunda’s.

For those who might be surprised to read about this important discussion, some background information can be found on the Regional Council of Goyder website.
It’s difficult to point directly at the information as it is in drop downs, so it is duplicated below.
You can find the original on their website at: “Reports“, then scroll down until you see one called
“Representation Review” (and click on it – this should show you the information.

At the 16 February 2021 ordinary Council meeting the following motions were passed;

  • That the DRAFT Representation Review Report – February 2021 as prepared by the Chief Executive Officer pursuant to Section 12(8a) of the Local Government Act 1999, be adopted for community consultation and be made available for public consultation from 24 February 2021 – 24 March 2021; and
  • That a public meeting be held in Eudunda on Wednesday 7 April 2021 at 7:00pm to hear and consider the submissions received.

That Council approves an un-budgeted expenditure of $4,000 for advertising costs for the Representation Review project from General Revenue and that the Council budget be varied accordingly.
That in accordance with Section 12(7)(a)(ii) of the Local Government Act the consultation period on the Representation Review Options Paper commence on Wednesday 2 December 2020 and conclude on Friday 11 January 2021.

Eudunda Bowls News 13th March

By Peter on Mar 16, 2021 05:59 pm
Eudunda Bowls News Banner

The Night bowls was cancelled due to rain. The first night of finals involving all teams will be played this week (tonight – 13th Mar).

Division 1 played Angaston on our home turf finishing 74-124. The day began with cold, wintry conditions and ended in pleasant autumnal weather. Tait Rogers had a replay of last round’s match with Jono Voigt; this time Tait down by one shot in a cliff-hanger 23-24. Frank Pfitzner had a great battle with David Jaunay 17-26, Bill Mader had luck against him 15-32 to Matt Short, and Chris Jones’ team wished it kept raining all afternoon, and particularly after three or four costly ends, went down 19-42 to the impeccable Liam Buckley.

Division 2A had a bye.

Division 3 played Tanunda at Tanunda and lost 44-72, Eudunda being denied a chance in the finals. Marg Nietschke had a tight match with Neil Slater 15-18, Roy Fiegert was competitive against Judy Thompson 17-22, and Pat Obst was down to Brian Holkas.

The Team of the Week was Tait, Mally, Karl and Jake.

Club members enjoyed the fish and chips and pizza tea as the windup of the season.

Presentation Night is Saturday 27th March at 6.30 for 7pm. Come and support your club, collect your trophies and bring a raffle prize. See you there.

Eudunda Bowls News

By Peter on Mar 14, 2021 05:56 pm
Eudunda Bowls News Banner

The Night Bowlers played their last game of the minor round before finals start this week (tonight). All teams are playing tonight for the first final. The Robbie Rebels are the minor round leaders. The meal voucher was won by Carolyn Doering and the bottle of wine, Maurice Nietschke.

What a final! The Ladies first final against Angaston was a squash buckling finish as never seen before! After the last end Eudunda and Angaston were drawn, so an extra end was played by each of the three rinks; two of the rinks had a two shots up/two shots down result; all eyes were on the umpire when called to the third rink for a very close measure which was declared equal, so drawn again! A further extra end was played in which Angaston emerged the winner by two shots! Result Eudunda 58, Angaston 60, which ended Eudunda’s finals’ aspirations. The Judy Milde/Judy Argent match 24-16, Pat Obst/Eileen Argent 20-17 and Joy Hams/Mavis Elsworthy 14/27. The Eudunda Ladies invited the Angaston Ladies for lunch at the Light Hotel, where a great atmosphere pervaded, continuing on from the game which was played in good spirit.

Thursday Afternoon Division 1 played Angaston at Eudunda which saw Eudunda 37-96. Murray Sauer and Gordon ‘Kiwi’ Te.Au were competitive against David Wilson and David Jaunay, while Bill Mader struggled to find the answers for Jono Voigt.

Thursday Afternoon Division 2 played Angaston at Angaston and were down 47-67. Ron Hams and Tony Scoot came second to Malcolm Johnston and Fred Thomas, and Roy Fiegert 22 to Rob Koerner 23 in a very tight match.

Division 1 played Nuriootpa at Nuriootpa and came second 74-117. The shining light was Tait Rogers with a one-shot win against Steve Heintze; Chris Jones also had a cliff-hanger 25-26 against Jim Barr, Andrew Pfitzner was 17-25 to Brenton Brown, and Bill Mader came second to John Carter.

Division 2A played Kapunda on our home turf finishing 59-80, however Gordon ‘Kiwi’ Te.Au had a brilliant win 25-22 against Jack Trotta. Ruth Scoot was down by nine shots to Bob Booth, and Ron Hams down 15 to John Dermody.

Division 3 also played Kapunda on our green and had an excellent win 73-72. Pat Obst and Marg Nietschke were down to Lance Sturtzel and Peter Maitland, however Roy Fiegert’s magnificent win 33-17 against Gloria Robinson clinched the one-shot win overall.

Team of the Week was Roy Fiegert, Jeff Willoughby, Colin Menz and Joy Fiegert.

The Club Draw was won by Mally Schutz.

After this week’s last match of the minor round, bowlers are encouraged to stay for a pizza and fish and chips tea, to round off the season.

Association Championships at Lyndoch on Sunday and Monday concluded a busy weekend of bowling. Eudunda’s competitors unfortunately were not in the playoffs.

Cyber Threats Include Ag Industries – Be Prepared

By Peter on Mar 14, 2021 03:06 am
Cyber Threats Alert Warning Sign
Cyber Threats Alert Warning Sign

Agrifutures Australia has released and interesting article called “Cyber threats in rural industries – are we prepared?”

The threat of computer hacking of equipment used by farmers has been around for quite some time. As many areas of farming become mechanized, many are controlled by electronic means, be it a dedicated EPROM or CPU that does manages many devices or just one purpose it could be vulnerable to manipulation by the unscrupulous.

Agrifutures Australia writes,
‘Digital technologies are everywhere – from helping farmers regulate water use and track soil moisture, remotely control irrigation pumps, help collect and manage genetic information in livestock or drive autonomous and GPS guided machinery, to name just a few. With these technologies comes risk. As rural industries’ reliance on technology, data and information sharing grows, so does the likelihood of potentially devastating cyber attacks.’

CLICK THIS LINK TO READ THE ARTICLE

At the end of the article you are invited to complete a short survey,
Some of our farmers might be interested in following up on this, as there is a benefit in doing so,
‘While responses to the survey are anonymous, participants have the option to elect to receive a free personalised report reviewing their cyber resilience and be benchmarked against peers.’

Former Police Officer Tells of Eudunda Policing History at February Probus Meeting

By Peter on Mar 13, 2021 12:57 am
Bill Prior & Fay Grosser At Feb 2021 Probus Meeting
Guest Speaker Bill Prior & Eudunda Probus President Fay Grosser At Feb 2021 Probus Meeting

Recently retired police officer Bill Prior spoke to members of the Eudunda Probus Club at their February meeting.

Bill was born at Eudunda and served in S.A.P.O.L. in various departments including the C.I.B.

Although New South Wales was founded before South Australia it only had a small localised police force operating where as South Australia became the first established police force in Australia in 1838, two years after the government was formed.

Bill mentioned that in Hedley Scholz’s book entitled, “The Hundred of Julia Creek” a police station was established approximately 5 km west from the small settlement of Julia which started in 1842 and closed in 1846 and then transferred to the copper mining town of Burra which commenced mining in 1845.

The Julia Creek police station was staffed by two mounted constables being rotated on a six monthly basis, with three horses and duties to patrol 70,000 acres of Anlaby Station.

Bill stated the area around Eudunda was settled by pastoralists in the early 1840’s with farming becoming predominant by the late 1860’s.

In 1872 Eudunda was surveyed and derived its name from a spring which the Aboriginal Ngadjuri tribe called Judandakawi meaning sheltered water.

Eudunda became the junction of crossroads for stock travelling from South West Queensland and Western New South Wales to markets in Adelaide.

The Eudunda Hotel (originally the Royal Hotel) was established in 1872 and since then there have been four police stations situated in Eudunda.

The first being in the horse stable of the Royal Hotel where people who became intoxicated were chained to a horse stall until convicted by a court of law.

The second police station was situated in Eyre Street. In 1876 this building was originally used by railway workers during the construction of the Kapunda to Morgan Railway line open in 1878. This building comprised a residence, courthouse and jail as well as a temporary post office.

In May 1914 a contract was let for the construction of a 21 km railway line from Eudunda passing through Point Pass to Robertstown.

As Point Pass was approximately halfway, a railway work camp was established there. As many workers indulged in too much alcohol at the local hotel the Eudunda police were often called to arrest those who drank too much.

This then necessitated the need to establish a police station at Point Pass. Unfortunately it is not known where it was situated.

It is believed either a room was rented at the local hotel or a temporary police tent was used.

The name given to Point Pass by Mrs. Ann Richards an elderly resident was originally named Pointz Pass, named after her hometown in Ireland.

Eudunda’s third Police Station was in Gunn Street, Eudunda, is now privately owned and the fourth, new one was built in the centre of Eudunda, Kapunda Street where Coles Brothers stock agents yards used to be situated.

The next Eudunda Probus Club meeting is also thier
A.G.M. and will be held in the Eudunda Institute on
Wednesday March 17th 2021 at 9-45am.
