Last Friday, March 12th, was the 30th and final day of our inaugural UCD Business Alumni Challenge - 'Around the Globe in 30 Days' -  the first alumni initiative of this nature in Ireland. Thank you to all who participated in the challenge and those who joined us last Saturday, March 13th, for our live celebratory closing event.

This month we feature interviews with Sharon Daly, BComm '87, Head of Matheson’s London office, and Cian O'Neill, MBA '11, Senior Director, Customer Experience at Microsoft. We also include a roundup of our past and future events, and news from your Alumni Network and the College of Business.

UCD Business Alumni Challenge

Our inaugural Business Alumni Challenge - 'Around the Globe in 30 days' concluded last week, and what a fantastic and uplifting 4 weeks it was. With almost 1,000 participants across 40 countries and 5 continents, in locations stretching from Auckland, NZ to San Francisco, USA, it truly was a global alumni community effort which, incredibly, saw us reach our initial target of circumnavigating the globe after just two weeks. Over the 30 days participants clocked a fantastic 87,000+ kilometres. It has been wonderful to see the distances clocked, the overall engagement and enthusiasm. Watch a video recording of our celebratory event here and get ready for our 2022 UCD Business Alumni Challenge.

Social Entrepreneurs Ireland (SEI) is looking for people across the country with innovative ideas to solve social problems – people with courage, insight and ambition to put forward a solution to a social problem, and act on it. UCD In Conversation: Transforming Ireland's Energy Sector
Professor Andrew Keane, Director of both the Energy Institute at UCD and of the ESIPP and Paul Manning, Co-Founder and Chief Commercial Officer for NovoGrid will appear in conversation with PJ Rudden, Founder of Aengus Consulting Ltd, and Chairman of Construction Innovation and Digital Adoption at Dept. of Public Expenditure and Reform, to discuss energy production in Ireland and how UCD spin-out NovoGrid can improve energy efficiency with GridBoost technology. Register here.

New Initiative to Address Gender Equity
A new initiative ‘UCD Smurfit Women, Inspiring More’, was recently launched to promote the continued strong trajectory of women from education to industry. The opening event featured alumna Helen Doody and can be viewed here. The initiative is led by MSc in Aviation Finance students Andrew Tang and Hannah Taylor, and alumna Rebecca Yue. Monthly events have proved very popular and all are invited to the next webinar on April 14. Details will be listed on our events page shortly.

UCD Smurfit Careers Network
Smurfit Spring Career and Internship Fair
The Smurfit Careers Network is happy to report that it’s second and final career fair of the year, the UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School Spring Career & Internship Fair, took place on the 9th of February with great success. 31 companies hiring across a range of industries and experience levels and 281 of our students 'attended' the virtual fair on the Graduateland platform which facilitated 683 conversations between the groups. We would like to thank everyone who took part in the fair and who assisted in the promotion of the event to employers and students. The Careers Network have commenced planning for future fairs for the 2021/22 academic year, we encourage all alumni and employers interested in attending to reach out to Smurfit Careers.
