“I Train so I can be a better runner”
Article by Erik Lane

Eleni first came to Level via Classpass, when she attended a group class conducted by Eva in Feb 2019. “I was lucky enough to be the only one attending and that’s how I got to meet Eva.”

"I saw how much thought and care she puts into her clients; she took the time to explain the movements and looked out for my form. That was the first time I thought of getting a personal trainer."

At that moment, Eleni realised that there was more to fitness than just gym classes and reps and sets. 1-on1 personal training could help her better understand the mechanics of her body and improve her overall strength and fitness.

Personal training has taught me how to train the right way, and move with the right form. It is a great way to add variety to my workouts, while having an accountability partner to empower and challenge me.”

As an avid recreational runner, Eleni also wanted to improve her running performance. Over the next couple of months, Eva brought Eleni through a series of programs that revolved around strength and plyometrics to achieve her goals.

Eva incorporated front squats into her programming to work the quads, gluten and core, loaded sled pushes to build up endurance under fatigue, and a mix of full body explosive exercises like wall balls, burpee box jump overs and thrusters.

It wasn't long before Eleni could do a 53kg regular deadlift, a 70kg trap bar deadlift and a 75kg farmer's walk. Eleni has also seen significant improvements with her running performance. From 5km runs, she built up the endurance to complete her first ever half marathon.

"Personal training has provided me with strength, confidence and drive to challenge myself and become better. It's massively helped my running as well, pushing my performance to a completely different level."

"Eleni is able to hit 10km with ease these days. Apart from getting stronger physically, which enables her to quicken her running pace, she has also gotten stronger mentally to push through the pain," said Eva.

Apart from reaching her goals, Eva and Eleni have grown much closer through Level. Their friendship extends beyond the two of them, to the other trainers and members of the gym as well. Eleni goes for post-workout coffee regularly with Eva and other Level members.

"Level is great because you always recognise everyone inside. People are always checking up on you. It feels like you're training with your friends, it's not intimidating or pretentious."

"I've found a community of people I enjoy being around, and a great friend in my trainer Eva."

Eleni has found that training at Level has not only provided her with a more profound understanding of fitness, but it has also given her the drive to push beyond her ever-evolving goals. She is looking to get stronger and to complete her first ever full marathon in the near future.

"If you want to reach your goals and have fun while you're at it, there's no better place than Level!"

Eleni's full story, along with the stories of our other amazing clients, can be found here. "I Train So I Can" is a continuing series that goes deeper into discovering the lives of our people outside the gym - the things that really matter - and how coming to Level has helped them elevate the more important things.
Nobody Asked, But
What kind of training should I focus on?

If you’re asking this question (which you’re probably not, because nobody asked), the best— and most unhelpful— answer is this: it depends.
So because we’ve got some extra space on this issue of the newsletter, let’s talk about what this depends on.

We’re going to assume we know nothing about you and your training history, and your injuries past or current, and how much you sleep, and the time you have to train, and what you work as, and how you prefer to move, and whether or not that back pain is actually a disc bulge or you not stretching your hamstrings once over the past 3 years, and who you live with, and whether that affects the energy you have.

We’ll look past all that for now, because training is! the! most! important! thing! for! your! physical! and! mental! goals!

We need to stop looking at our bodies as a cargo ship bearing containers that segregate different aspects of our life and person, drifting through the ocean of life like a log on a lazy river. The entirety of our psyche and body are only as strong and healthy as our parts that we don’t focus on: relationships that tire us, jobs that drain us, worries that paralyse us and yes, bodies that we don’t love as much as we should.

If you haven’t noticed by now, we’re chest deep into the meat of what “it depends” means, and the short list can be found in paragraph 3 of this article.

The best way to start feeling better both physically and mentally is not by trying to burn the most calories to look a certain way, nor is it lifting the most weight nor holding the perfect handstand. These things are outcomes that flow from having your body and mind in order. Does that mean we don’t move our bodies and just spend our time in therapy? Of course not, but it means we should start being accountable to ourselves and try to reduce unnecessary stress in our lives.

This looks stressful

Talk to someone you trust, then move in ways that make you happy. Not just the sweaty endorphin kind of happy, but in forms that challenge and excite you! Go for a dance class, learn how to perform a snatch, climb more difficult routes in your climbing gym, run because you want to spend time around nature and wildlife.

That’s where the training plan comes in. It comes in to elevate your privilege of movement. It comes in to provide thoughtful, progressive ways that help you be more… you!

Go for sessions because you like them and because they help you, not because you have to burn that stray pineapple tart or spend time in purgatory for the boozy brunch last weekend.

So the next time that person asks “Eeyer why you go gym you not scared you get bulky ah”, think about your deep health, smile and wave, and keep doing things and being around people that make you happy.

Want more answers to unimportant questions? Stand in the middle of the gym and yell your requests to the sky! We picked up this one from all the times people have tried balancing their phones on walls, windows and small children to film themselves (and failed). Siri's always listening, and so are we.

Take It Off!

Keep your pants on, we're just taking 10% off all our class packages in March! This is limited to one package of 10 classes and above per person, so if you haven't cashed in on this, you've got about 10 days to go. This promotion isn't applicable to our Starter Pack and our Barbell Club packages, so most of you should be in the clear.

The code MARCH10 is only applicable on our website and not through the Mindbody app.

One more thing: We're trying out a new thing with booking classes in the second quarter of 2021! Instead of opening our slots for the whole period, we'll release classes a week before they happen, so everyone has a fair and equal chance to book for a class. If you don't see your favourite class that's a month away on the Mindbody app or the website, this is probably the reason why!

If a class you love is constantly getting booked out, let us know! We'll try to open a new one if there's sufficient demand!

Help us fit classes to your schedule! Let our coaches know if there are better timings that work for you as you navigate new work arrangements, and we'll keep a finger on the pulse to see if there is sufficient demand for classes that make more sense for your schedule.
Damn Daniel!

You've probably seen the Boy Wonder around the gym by now, either attached to a barbell in the midst of his training, his iPad in the midst of studying or to one of his increasingly popular Skill classes. Daniel joined us recently as a full-fledged coach, but he also spends his time as a part time student and training for his next powerlifting competition- damn Daniel! We chatted him up between his sets to talk about the many things he juggles, his journey as a coach, and his discerning eye for dank memes.

Tell us about yourself!

Hey Level fam, I’m Daniel! I was never sporty or fit until I started polytechnic studies. Seeking a more active lifestyle (and a less chubby look), I took on the combat sport Muay Thai for a few years, spent the later part of them coaching others in the sport, and even competed in an amateur boxing match. Shortly after, I enlisted into the Commandos for my National Service (NS) in 2018.

My time spent practicing and coaching Muay Thai, as well as enduring my most gruelling NS experiences, opened my eyes to the vast physical potential the body is capable of achieving - in terms of strength, endurance and cardiovascular endurance (as long as the mind is willing). On top of that, both phases helped develop a passion in me to nurture people towards a fitter, stronger and healthier version of themselves.

Fast-forwarding to today, that passion still stands strong. I am a certified personal trainer and group class coach with a team I enjoy being a part of. I am eternally grateful to have this opportunity to empower as many people as I can through fitness and exercise, and help them realise the potential their bodies are capable of achieving!

How long have you been at Level for?

I first joined the team back in late December 2020 and spent slightly over a month observing the other trainers while they conducted their classes and PT sessions, learning as much as I could from them. In February this year, I was given the green light to conduct Skill classes of my own!

We see the grind! Tell us about your training.

I currently practice a competitive strength sport called powerlifting. My routine has me performing heavy compound movements 4 days a week - Monday (Squats and bench press), Tuesday (Deadlifts), Thursday (Squats and bench press), and Saturday (Squats, bench press and deadlifts). My coach @jonathantsg of The Strength Guys works the magic behind the scenes by programming my workouts and correcting my lifting technique.

You could say that strength training is somewhat... symbolic to me. It represents my drive to never stop growing (both character and physical-wise), and to always be better (and stronger) than the person I was yesterday.

We hear you're a student as well! Tell us about what you're learning, and why you're doing it! Is it tough to juggle everything?

Yep! I’m a part-time student at PSB Academy studying a Bachelor in Sport and Exercise Science offered by Edinburgh Napier University.

Is it tough? Not exactly. As one of the newer trainers, my workload is still relatively manageable, so I’m able to comfortably dedicate sufficient time to my studies (For now, at least).

Tell us about your most memorable client.

My most memorable client is actually my first client - Leo, my 69-year-old stepfather. He’s an avid cyclist who regularly cycles up to 80km once or twice a week but had not included resistance training in his routine since his 20s. One day in October 2020, he decided he wanted to put on some extra strength and muscle, and so I  took him on as my very first PT client.

5 months have passed, and I have proudly witnessed him crush his fitness goals one by one - progressing from struggling a bodyweight hip hinge to deadlifting 60kg for 10 reps, completing his first pull-up and push-up, and building quite the aesthetic physique for someone his age (just to name a few).

But I find my stepdad most memorable for one reason: his determination. He understood from Day 1 that the journey to his goals would not be easy and that results would come slower due to his age - he has now grown to trust and enjoy the process, eagerly acing every workout.

You've amassed quite a collection of memes! Tell us what they are and why you feel memes will change the world.

Love this question! All the memes that pop up on my social media are basically the ones that actually made me chuckle.

I feel memes have already changed the world. You have all sorts of creative individuals (who usually have nothing better to do with their time) creating all kinds of meme formats, which are often relatable to many people’s lives.

And come on, memes are the modern way of spreading laughter and amusement all around - I enjoy sharing dem memes knowing that someone will have a little laughter even for a brief moment.

How has the journey with Level been so far?

Absolutely amazing. From the moment I stepped foot into the Telok Ayer studio for my job interview, I knew I was in for an incredible journey. Even till now, I find myself surrounded by growth-oriented colleagues who, like me, care about bringing out the best in their clients - exactly what I hoped for when I first submitted that resume.

What does 2021 look like for you?

My favourite question of this lot! Covid-19 aside, 2021 looks bright and full of opportunities just waiting to be taken. I am grateful for this opportunity to work with a positive and supportive team, to grow into the trainer I want to be, and to help my clients realise what their bodies are truly capable of.

I've been with Level for barely 3 months, but believe me when I say that this gym has kickstarted a new journey of growth for me, and opened up plenty of doors for learning and networking experiences. I’ve mentioned this before to others, and I’ll say it again: 2021 is going to be a GREAT year!

Daniel is available for personal training at both our 14 Robinson Road as well as our 137 Telok Ayer outlets. He runs Skill classes at 14 Robinson Road on Wednesdays at 8am and on Saturdays and Sundays 9am. We'll be opening additional Skill and Structure classes with Daniel come April on Weekend afternoons, so stay tuned for that!
Level Jakarta: Meet Our Coaches!
Our little sister in Jakarta is already 4 months old! We're going to be showcasing a bit more of them in future newsletters but for now, we'll let you meet one of their brightest. We caught up with Mario Pangestu, our resident Strength and Olympic Weightlifting coach at Level Jakarta to talk about how he joined us, the pandemic across the pond, and why he's also known as "The Gorilla".

Welcome to the team! Tell us about yourself!

I was born in 1988 to a family of four brothers and I’m the youngest! I’m a Pelita Harapan graduate and from the age of 16, I’ve been going to the gym almost every day cause I like it so much. I didn’t hang out much cause I was too busy geeking out at the gym! Haha

Eventually, I graduated from the Australian Institute of Fitness but before that, I had a career in ILP International Language Programs as a marketing manager for their English courses. Not long after, I pursued my life calling in fitness coaching and built up the courage to jump into it full time.

In 2014, I started powerlifting and won third place in a powerlifting co. I also became Top 5 in Indonesia Strongmen. But now, I’m currently into Olympic weightlifting.

I believe that fitness really boosted by self esteem, confidence, and it’s such a positive thing beyond just getting ‘fit’ physically. It’s really been a big part of my life in healing my soul. It’s holistic, and I want to share this experience with other people.

What was it like starting a new job in the middle of the pandemic?

Really hard. Fitness is a service and it requires direct contact with other people. But I really believe that there’s a true silver lining in all of this chaos. With less working hours in comparison to before the lockdowns, I’m finding more time to be with my family and for some quality self-love. I get to reevaluate new ventures in my professional life, opening up new channels, and I’ve found that my schedule is much more flexible now.

We hear great things from the people who’re being trained by you— what’s it like working at Level Jakarta?

Thanks so much! Level is so different and just… cool! It’s exclusive in the most positive way. I feel so appreciated and heard as an employee at Level. Everyone is so supportive and humble, and I really feel the respect for one another.

I’m happy to meet like minded people. There’s a big sense of belonging to this gym.

We see you’re big into Olympic Weightlifting! Tell us how you fell in love with the sport and how training has been.

Yass! I feel that Olympic weightlifting opens up my mind, brings my knowledge about fitness and strength to the next level! Before this, I was a powerlifter. I got injured often and I always solely focused on strength and getting my numbers up. After trying and getting into weightlifting, Now I know elegance and grace in lifting.

The stillness, mindset and the calmness of lifting- now that matures me even more in terms of experience. Because weightlifting is so challenging and complex, I’m learning so much about the tiny details in human movement, including mobility. Oh how stiff was my back before I did Olympic lifting!

Why the gorilla in @magorillaz?

Because my dad has always called me his little monkey ever since I was a boy. So from little monkey to a full fledged alpha beast!

Back when I was travelling to and from America, my ‘gorillaz’ represented brotherhood and family of one person to another. So the name became MA ‘Gorillaz’ cause you know… MA’ Brotha! Yeehaw!

What does 2021 look like for you?
It will be positive! As long as I do my best everyday. I believe that if I do good things, good things will come back to me. Hard work cannot lie. Put in the effort no matter how small it looks!

Mario provides Personal Training services at Level Jakarta, and also runs The Resistance (it's a class, not a political movement) on Saturdays at 10.15am, and The Refinery (also a class, not a gemstone factory) at 11.45am on Wednesdays and 11.30am on Saturdays.
