The Week That Was: Listener New Music

From Scotland to the Falcon's Nest!

Mon. Mar. 15 - What were our interns digging in February? We found out on Monday that it was music from Mobley (Mary), Caution (Sam), Lord Huron (Matt), and the Pretty Reckless and Carly Pearce (Sami).

Tue. Mar. 16 - Tuesday started four days of new music picks from our community. It was wonderful to hear from Walt Falconer and his flock, as well as the always-amazing Niklas Nygards.

Wed. Mar. 17 - We celebrated St. Patrick's Day with new music picks from the OG, Steven Routledge. He touted tunes from Dinosaur Jr., Cloud Nothings, Emily James, the Weather Station, and Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. Bravo, sir!

Thurs. Mar. 18Scott Isom tore up the new music picks on Thursday, tossing out selections from Mat D, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Paul Field and Kasey Chambers, Black Thought, and Peter Stampfel.

Fri. Mar. 19 - We wrapped up everything with a tidy new music bow on Friday with four listener calls:  Jesse from San Antonio, Liam McIndoe, Harris King and Vasant Ramamurthy. They picked tunes by NRCSSST, the Chills, Ladyhawke, Barbara Manning and the Besnard Lakes. Boom!

INTERN OF THE WEEK: MARY EDELBERG

Sam & Matt & Sami & Mary!

I live in … San Jose CA.

When not working on Rockin’ the Suburbs … I’m an audio engineer contractor for LinkedIn Learning.

My favorite artists are … Rihanna, Janelle Monae, Dessa, Janet Jackson, Pentatonix, Todrick Hall

My record collection consists of … like five or six records. But maybe upwards of 45 if I include my dad’s collection.

The last record I bought was … David Bowie’s Blackstar.

The first concert I saw was … Earth, Wind & Fire, at the Kentucky State Fair in the ‘90s. I was probably 9 or 10.

The best concert I saw was … Janet Jackson, the All For You tour, my freshman year of high school.

My favorite song (right now) is … “Adore You” by Harry Styles.

I play … drums and other percussion instruments that don’t require me to read music.

Friday New Releases: What Are You Buying Next?

Jon Batiste – We Are (Verve)
Fans of Stephen Colbert’s late night show know Batiste as the laid-back bandleader. Fans of Pixar animation know him as the guy who co-wrote the jazzy score for “Soul.” But here’s a chance to get to know Batiste as an artist who has much to say about the state of the world.

Harry Connick Jr. – Alone With my Faith (Verve)
The contemporary crooner took some time in isolation to get in touch with his spiritual side and record an album of gospel music. Praise be.

Lana Del Rey – Chemtrails Over the Country Club (Interscope)
One media outlet’s headline calls this Del Rey’s “dreamy new masterpiece.” She may be a talented songwriter and singer, but isn’t every of her releases described that way?

Andrew Farriss – Andrew Farriss (BMG)
The guy in INXS who co-wrote most of their songs (with Michael Hutchence) finally released a solo album? We loved INXS, that blend of new wave pop and classic rock. Oh, how we’ve missed their sound. Wait, this is an Americana record? Oh, OK.

Loretta Lynn – Still Woman Enough (Legacy)
The badass country legend releases an album of traditional songs, co-produced by John Carter Cash. Where is that credit card again?

Middle Kids –Today We’re the Greatest (Domino)
These Australian rockers add a little more arena-rock stomp to their indie foundation. Whether that’s good or bad depends on how big of a venue you’d like to see them in when allowed, we suppose.

Paul Stanley’s Soul Station – Now and Then (UMe)
Here’s a sentence you didn’t expect to read: Kiss’ Starchild records an R&B album. About half originals and half covers, this record is getting pretty positive reviews. (The originals aren’t bad; the covers are surprisingly faithful, although one wonders in what setting a listener would prefer these versions over those by the Spinners, the Miracles and so on). Thankfully, Gene, Ace and Peter didn’t release their own albums on the same day.
