The Way - Easter Hope

The latest edition of The Way - the free newspaper for the Church in Cumbria - is published digitally today.

There's an article on the drop-in centre for homeless and vulnerable people which is being run in Currock, south Carlisle, by the Rev Alun Jones and chef Mike Cullen (pictured above).

Readers can find out more about the Anna Chaplains who are reaching out in new ways to older people in care homes or those who may feel isolated in their own homes.

Meet the county's first chaplain to the Traveller, Gypsy and Roma community and learn how a pilot project has been supporting people's mental wellbeing throughout lockdown.

            C of E Vision Webinar

An invitation has gone out for as many people as possible to join a special webinar to be held next week which will consider the Church of England's 10-year vision.

The Archbishop of York, Stephen Cottrell, and panel members will explore what it means to be a church that is centred on Jesus Christ and shaped by Jesus Christ – a church that is simpler, humbler, bolder.

The event on Thursday 25 March from 12 noon to 1pm also offers the opportunity to ask questions about what the strategic priorities mean for you, your church or diocese:

  • a church of missionary disciples
  • a church which is younger and more diverse
  • a church where the mixed ecology of many forms of church are the norm.

New God for All Facebook Page

We have a new Facebook Page, which reflects the vision refresh. If you’re on Facebook, please ‘Like’ to show your support.

The new page will be updated regularly to share the news and stories of people around the county who are working to build God’s kingdom in Cumbria.

Be Who You Are Created To Be
Click above to hear how the Pioneer Certificate course has inspired Julie Jackson.

Pioneers are often said to have the gift of not fitting in.

Julie Jackson is an amazingly creative person and in the video above, she reflects on how the Pioneer Certificate has helped her creative spirit emerge.

If you have an idea for mission, and feel maybe you’re not quite sure how that fits, come along to our Taster Evening on 14th April to find out more.

         National Day of Reflection

If your church is doing anything to support the National Day of Reflection on 23 March, you can publicise the service/event on the Marie Curie website.

You can do this using the Supporting Organisations section of the website. Put details of the service/event in the message box and include a postcode in the place section. Your church will then be included in the map of events.

There will be a minute’s silence at 12 noon on 23 March - the one year anniversary of when the UK first went into lockdown - to create a moment that shows support for the millions of people who’ve been bereaved.

The Church Support Hub has also developed a suite of resources that churches may wish to tap into for services on Sunday 21 March. These include special prayers, posters and prayer cards and downloadable social media graphics and artwork. The resources can be accessed here.

Meanwhile new research conducted by the C of E nationally shows that the majority of mourners have not felt able to say goodbye properly during the pandemic.

Statistics for Mission

The Church of England is still keen to try to capture information about what has been happening in parishes around the country after what was an unprecedented year.

So churches are reminded that the deadline for completing the annual Statistics for Mission has been pushed back a bit to 31 March.

Clearly the situation continues to create great pressures for all in ministry and mission, so our thanks go to those who have already completed the annual online return.

Please can we encourage as many of you to complete this as possible as the information it provides, both as a Diocese and a national church is really useful.

A set of ‘Questions & Answers’ may help you along the way. If you need a reminder of your login details, please email here
